Alex Smalley enters the final round of the Wyndham Championship with an opportunity to claim his first PGA TOUR victory at his own home course.
Smalley fired a 5-under 65 in the third round to reach 14-under par at Sedgefield Country Club, where he is a member and regularly plays and practises during weeks away from the Tour.
The setting makes the opportunity special.
Friends, family and fellow members are following him around the course. Smalley describes himself as fortunate and grateful to compete in a PGA TOUR event at a place that forms part of his normal golfing life.
The familiarity also creates extra pressure.
“You have a certain expectation of how you feel like you should play the golf course.”
Smalley knows the lines, slopes and sections of the greens. But he also emphasises that tournament Sedgefield plays very differently from the course he encounters during an ordinary week at home.
The setup is firmer, faster and more demanding.
Smalley gave himself numerous birdie opportunities during his 65 and produced several strong short-game recoveries when he missed greens. The finish, particularly the 18th, left him frustrated, but he remained pleased with the round as a whole.
He believes he probably would have accepted five under before starting.
Sedgefield’s putting surfaces remain one of the greatest challenges.
A player can hit an excellent approach close to the hole and still face a six-foot putt breaking between one foot and a foot and a half. Distance from the cup does not automatically equal an easy opportunity.
The side of the hole and the direction of the slope are critical.
Smalley’s preparation also included an important two-week break late in a long season.
He spent both weeks at home, something he says has happened only one other time this year. Sedgefield was closed during the second week while the course underwent its final tournament preparation, so Smalley practised at the Farm course at Greensboro Country Club.
The time away reinforced a lesson he learned during his first PGA TOUR season:
“Rest is almost as important—or maybe even more important—than playing a bunch of tournaments.”
That recovery period has allowed Smalley to arrive at Wyndham physically and mentally refreshed for one of the biggest opportunities of his career.
His final-round strategy will be aggressive—but only from the correct positions.
From the fairway, Smalley believes players can attack many of Sedgefield’s hole locations. The first cut is more manageable than the deeper rough, although grain and uneven lies can still produce unpredictable contact.
Miss the fairway by too much and the entire strategy changes.
Sunday will therefore begin from the tee.
Find the fairway.
Create as many realistic birdie opportunities as possible.
Keep pushing forward.
Smalley already holds a strong FedExCup position, but his primary objective is not protecting points. It is attempting to win his first PGA TOUR tournament in front of the people who watch him practise and play throughout the year.
