Tony Finau has extended his season for at least two more rounds—and intends to attack the weekend with nothing held back.
After damaging his position during the opening round, Finau knew he needed a strong Friday simply to make the cut and preserve any chance of reaching the FedExCup Playoffs.
He delivered enough.
Finau was particularly proud of the closing stretch. He missed several greens over his final holes but repeatedly saved par, producing the clutch recoveries required to remain in the tournament.
His reward is an opportunity.
Finau believes he needs two rounds in the low 60s to advance into the following week. The challenge is enormous, but there is no uncertainty about his approach:
“All gas, no brake.”
Finau told his caddie that if their season ends at Wyndham, it will not end through caution.
“If we go down, we’re going to go down swinging.”
The determination comes at the end of a year Finau evaluates with brutal honesty.
He calls the season disappointing and, up to this point, a failure. There is no attempt to disguise the lack of victories or the golf that left his postseason streak in danger.
But Finau’s career philosophy has always been:
You either win or you learn.
here has not been enough winning this year, so he believes there has been a tremendous amount of learning.
The Friday round also reinforced the strategy required at Sedgefield. When Finau found the fairway, the course remained directly in front of him and allowed him to attack pins. When he missed the fairway during the second nine, the round became a succession of recovery shots and difficult par saves.
That contrast will shape his weekend plan.
Aggressive does not mean reckless.
He must place the ball in the fairway, create enough realistic birdie opportunities and convert them at a rate capable of producing two extremely low scores.
Finau says the competitive fight remains as strong as it has been throughout his career and his life. When his back is against the wall, his only acceptable response is to continue fighting.
The cut was only the first hurdle.
Now comes the attempt to produce some weekend magic.
