ALEXANDRIA — With Troy Johnson out of the Men’s Executive title chase, division medalist Bryant Black nearly joined him watching the rest of the championship division from the sidelines on Thursday, Aug. 6.
A day after Johnson, who has won six of the past seven Men’s Executive titles, bowed out after dropping his first-round match, Black survived a 20-hole tilt over No. 17-seed Andrew Olson in the second round of the Men’s Executive division championship at the 105th Resorters Tournament at Alexandria Golf Club.
Black, the runner-up in the division the past two years, battled back from a three-hole lead Olson built with pars at the par-3 No. 7 and par-4 No. 9 holes sandwiched between a birdie at the par-4 No. 8 once the match transitioned to AGC’s back nine, winning four consecutive holes and briefly moving ahead in the match after parring the par-3 No. 13.
Olson squared the match after an adventurous par-5 No. 14 hole, only for Black to take back his 1-up lead with a par at the par-4 No. 15. However, a par from his opponent at the par-3 No. 17 hole evened the match, eventually requiring extra holes to determine the outcome, with Black taking the win on the second extra hole.
Black moves on to the Men’s Executive quarterfinal round, which begins at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, at Alexandria Golf Club. All golfers begin play at the par-4 No. 1 hole.

Tukey goes low on back nine to down Dinkel
Finding himself down by three holes early, No. 3-seed Samuel Tukey bounced back to square the match against No. 19-seed Jayson Dinkel with a birdie at the par-4 No. 12 hole. He later moved ahead with another birdie on a par-5, this time coming at No. 14, holding serve the rest of the way and finishing off a 2-up victory and a 1-under 34 coming in with a birdie at the closing par-4 No. 18.

Coatta takes down former champion Christensen
No. 20-seed Sam Coatta opened his match against 2023 Men’s Executive champion Dave Christensen by winning the par-4 No. 1 hole before proceeding to maintain an advantage the rest of the way, eventually finishing the 2-and-1 victory on the par-3 No. 17 hole.
Nelson holds nerve to defeat Womeldorf
Although No. 15-seed Erik Nelson never trailed in his match after winning the par-4 No. 2 hole against No. 31-seed Jake Womeldorf, he overcame trouble at various points that allowed Womeldorf to push the match to the par-4 No. 18, closing out the 2-up win by winning the last hole with a birdie.
