The Rollback Is a Step Backward for Golf
and
We Do Not Need to Lengthen Courses
Let’s talk about the viewer experience — the customer experience — because that’s what’s being forgotten in this rollback discussion.
Fans watching from home want excitement. They want to see records threatened and broken. They want to witness the impossible become reality. A round of 58, 57, maybe even 54 one day — that’s what makes people talk, share, and fall in love with the game.
Instead, the powers that be are trying to stop progress. But why?
We’re being told that courses are too short, that players are hitting the ball too far, and that we need to “protect the game.”
But the truth is, you are forgetting about the game from a spectator’s point of view, and the wow factor many other sports have. When players are on and pull the driver out on a gettable par 4, the crowd are audible with excitement — it's how golf becomes electrifying.
And when they don't get on the green, they’re often in trouble — even if they can drive a par 4 now and then.
That unpredictability is part of the show. It's what fans tune in to see.
Here’s the reality:
Nobody’s asking for shorter drives.
Nobody’s excited about watching fewer eagles or seeing par 4s turn back into boring lay-ups.
Fans aren’t sitting at home thinking, “I wish this game were a bit more like it was in 1982.”
Golf should be allowed to evolve, just like every other sport.
Technology has moved forward, but within strict limits — like the 1.5 smash factor cap on drivers.
Players still have to execute.
Equipment doesn’t make champions — skill, discipline, and hard work do.
If someone shoots a 58, 57, 56, 55 — and hopefully in my lifetime, a 54 — on a par 72 course, that should be celebrated, not feared and restricted.
That’s what sport is all about. Why are we trying to stop it?
Rolling back the golf ball just to maintain a mythical scoring status quo is not only unnecessary — it’s backwards.
We don’t need to shorten the game or lengthen the courses.
We just need to let the game unfold naturally, letting players push boundaries and letting fans enjoy the ride.
So again, I ask:
Who is this rollback for?
Because it certainly isn’t the people watching.
64! Good grief.
Great fighter
YouTube is horrible
32+32= Amazing.
He's the world's number 1 golf personality, even if someone else is the #1 Player.
What did he change between Thur. and Friday? That's what I want to know.
Stay where you belong liv not other tours. You liv players took 20 spots from other players that supported European tour.. I hate liv.
Scottie is the best Bryson is the man of the people (youth)
I'm just relieved he had that stinker on the first day, phew!!!😂
Bryson was in Stud Mode….
Good to see him stay in it
I hope he steps up to challenge Scottie in the next few years. Scottie is an absolute robot, he’s so consistent that it’s boring. Hopefully Bryson can push him closer.
Ironman! 💪🫶
Mad at NBC for not putting him in the featured groups… what morons!! He is one of the most popular golfers… AND he went from 144th to tied for 2nd at one point. That is a crazy story!!! NBC sucks at their coverage!!!
