Highlights of the Friday & Saturday qualifying sessions from the San Marino GP of 1991 🇸🇲
These sessions were held on 26th & 27th April 1991.
The Saturday session was held in wet conditions, so the grid was set based on the faster times from Friday’s dry running. Coverage originally from Eurosport, with Richard Nichols and John Watson on commentary.
This weekend would see Stefan Johansson replaced at AGS by Fabrizio Barbazza, who had a small moment with Nigel Mansell during qualifying.

Those Leyton Houses were just the best looking cars.
I remember the race well – Prost spun off on the parade lap on a wet track and didn't make the starting grid, Mansell's gearbox got stuck in neutral off the start and then Brundle punted him off at the end of the first lap, Patrese took the early lead from Senna until his Williams had reliability problems. I remember the San Marino GP was traditionally the race when all the teams would release their new cars for the season, as it was the start of the big (home) European season and was easy to ship replacement parts. It's funny thinking most of the teams used the previous years car for the first couple of races and rarely had their new car ready for the season start.

This was the race when Mansell was caught on camera swearing at Williams personnel on the pit wall. After he got punted off by Brundle he stormed back to the Williams pit wall and was effing and blinding (mainly at his engineer David Brown) about the Williams semi auto gearbox failing again. It went along something like "Have you ever made a good start, got your car into gear and then the f*****g gearbox immediately fails on you? Seriously, I would not recommend it, I definitely wouldn't. I come here, do my job, everything right and then this s**t, I'm f*****g p*****d off, I really am" he then stormed off. A lot of people said Mansell was difficult to work with and I recall Patrick Head (I think it was) once saying it'd be great if you could just fly Mansell in for the races and then straight back out for everything else.

Everytime I watch ayrton senna go around the tamburello, I get a pit my stomach. How i wish he'd stayed at McLaren, or the race would've been cancelled due to Ratzenberger's death, or any number of events that'd have prevented him from driving that day. This sport would have been so much better had he been around. Ah, one can only imagine
