Ben Griffin’s Driver Went the SAME Distance as His 3-Wood

Ben Griffin arrived at the Rocket Classic planning to complete some driver testing.

Then, shortly before the opening round, something unexpected happened.

His driver suddenly began producing far too much spin. When Griffin did use it during the round, the ball was travelling almost exactly the same distance as his 3-wood.

The solution was simple: use the club he trusted.

Griffin relied heavily on 3-wood because he knew where it was going and felt it was sacrificing almost no distance compared with his malfunctioning driver. That decision made several holes play longer, but removed a significant element of uncertainty from the tee.

Immediately after completing this interview, Griffin planned to return to the range and “figure out a driver” before beginning a rapid recovery routine involving treatment from his physiotherapist, a quick meal and as much sleep as possible.

Asked about his target for the following round, Griffin jokingly suggested a 57 or 56 before correcting himself and saying that his first objective was simply to wake up and eat breakfast.

He also explains why his early Friday tee time could provide a significant scoring advantage. With the renovated course using new greens, Griffin felt the putting surfaces became increasingly uneven under heavy foot traffic during the afternoon.

Fresh morning greens, he believes, should provide a truer roll and a much better opportunity to post a low number.
