Being able to shape the golf ball both ways is a huge advantage on the golf course.

Whether you need to hit a draw around a dogleg, fade one into a tight pin, escape trouble, or simply control your ball flight better, shot shaping is a skill every golfer can benefit from learning and practising.

In this video, I’m working with one of my students, Shawn, who wanted to understand how to draw and fade the golf ball more consistently. I take him through the simple science behind why the ball curves, then show him two of my favourite ways to shape the golf ball both ways without making drastic changes to his golf swing.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to draw the ball, fade the ball, or simply control your curve with more confidence, this lesson will give you a simple way to start practising it.

Watch as Shawn learns how to shape the golf ball both ways and find the method that works best for him.

  1. Bit confused, couldn't really see the 2:1 ratio. Like draw, 6deg path right and club face 3deg right .It looked like setup right of target club face aim at target.

  2. Great tips on shaping your shots. I would try Method 1 since I am to aggressive when I turn my right hand over my left trying to draw it that way. Thanks for the information.

  3. Suggestion for a future video: What does a pre-round warmup for you all look like? 15 minute warmup, 30 minute. Curious how you instruct your students to approach a warmup session before a round.

  4. Thanks for your continued great content, really enjoy and learn from it. Is there a level of golfer (i.e. hcp) where you think we should start trying to work shots on the course? I'm generally in the 3-6 hcp range and have my GIR up to 12. Maybe I'm obsessed with just trying to make sure I hit the greens, but feel just finding some way to get the ball on the green is definitely what allows me to score as well as I do. That said, I have some friends that are scratch or better and they are certainly making more birdies than me, possibly in part to me just trying to be sure I'm on the green and they might be shaping or getting closer to the pins by shaping. I can use shaping hooks or slices to get out of trouble but the subtle ones to try and release the ball to a tucked pin are still more than I want to attempt at the risk of missing a green.
