Cameron Young believed The Open was heading to a playoff.
Standing on the final hole, the World No. 3 felt the overwhelming likelihood was that he would have a playoff at worst. Then Ryan Fox produced three exceptional shots to complete one of the most dramatic major finishes of the season.
Young’s reaction is remarkably honest.
He admits that Fox’s finish was spectacular entertainment — provided you were anybody other than Cameron Young. He was not rooting against Fox, but he was understandably hoping for a very different outcome.
Young explains how Saturday ultimately cost him the championship. He continued to hit quality shots but repeatedly left himself putts from 25 to 30 feet and could not convert enough opportunities. He responded brilliantly on Sunday, stayed in contention and gave himself a genuine chance to win.
Reflecting on the major season, Young says he had a real opportunity to win two championships and therefore still feels that something was left unfinished. At the same time, repeatedly putting himself in contention proves that the biggest victory is close.
He also provides a fascinating explanation of how strong putting can slowly disappear. When one part of the game works for months, players begin concentrating elsewhere. The decline is delayed — and then, suddenly, the setup no longer feels correct.
