When Is Your Golf Swing Good Enough?

When is your golf swing actually good enough?

Golfers spend years chasing more speed, more lag, more distance, and a “perfect” swing, but does any of it actually lower your scores? In this video, I explain why the biggest improvement you can make might not be changing your swing at all.

  1. A lot of the basis for change for many golfers has to do with ego and self-esteem, or lack thereof. We often tend to focus too much on what others think of us, especially as beginners. You know how it is when you start a foursome with some strangers and beginners have to say that they're beginners before the first tee shot, just to set the expectations.

We want to chase a good-looking swing because we don't want to get laughed at due to our over-the-top chaos swings. In my opinion, if the ball goes where you want it to, it doesn't matter what the swing looks like. Furthermore, it doesn't matter how far you hit the ball with whatever club, as long as you can consistently hit the same distance with each club. I don't care if my 6-iron goes as far as your 9-iron. Ugly swing plus knowing your distance equals good golf. How it looks should not factor into the equation. Just my two cents.

  2. I was asked by a golfer in my league if I was still taking lessons. I told him no, I don’t need them now. He looked at me like I was being cocky but I am not. My last two rounds were 84 and 83. My swing is good enough. I don’t need a coach messing with it. I can swing easy and without thinking and can get pretty good distance 200 yard total distance drive. A change will mess that up.

  3. Once you've acquired a reasonable swing that will advance ball in the air the majority of progress lies between your ears and with a solid short game and putter, you can score, as per usual Tony great sage advise, fairways and greens

  4. Always good to hear this now and again. I know it and have had a “good enough” for a long time but my damn perfectionist brain doesn’t like good enough, haha. Despite inconsistent play I still shoot in the 70’s most of the time. But I have to periodically tell myself to just hit and react to ball flight as an athlete and not technically. Same with short game as well. Though I will add the caveat that I enjoy “playing golf swing” and chasing the numbers I want on a launch monitor. Those are both games to me just like a round of golf is.

  5. 🙏
    Sage words
As a retired engineer my schedule was 24/7 365 until seniority was good enough for reg schedule
    My point
    I’m lazy now 😊
Why would I work harder for an unnecessary result with lessons & practice ?
I love the mind game, between the ears
In other words the short game 👍

  6. Each round one has to go out and play with what they have that day, improve your short game and play with what swing you have that day.

  7. It's all about what's consistent for the player. Get consistent and then start MAINTAINING things instead of working on them. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the short game area, which nobody is hardly ever on yet they wonder why strokes ain't dropping 😐

  8. Spent early career playing a natural cut. Always shot mid-80s. Then, decided that I need to draw the ball. Been chasing that for 20 years and couldn’t match my earlier scores. Only now beginning to match those scores.

  9. As a diagnosed multiple personality I never know who's going to show up when I play, so I can't fix my swing. Dave's a +3 HCAP,
Joe can't break 115, and Mike cries a lot during the round. Being a multiple does have its advantages as I never have to eat alone in a restaurant.

  10. Lately my flexibility has been drastically reduced due to arthritis. I have neen trying the Jim Venetos method. I am in no search for distance, but I am working on it to be consistent with my contact. I will never be young again and I have no issue with that. I just enjoy playing and Im trying to get to be a single handicapper.

  11. Excellent video. I help people by having them change a club they may use. Like putting with a hybrid from the fairway close to the green or putting when they are 2 feet off the green. Such simple ways to improve without changing that awing you mentioned. Play with what you know. Keep them comin Tony.

  12. I'm pretty happy with my game. Most of the time I shoot in the 80s. I hit enough good shots every round to keep it interesting. Plus I play old man golf which makes everything easier.

  13. I can totally relate. My swing looks great. I hit it further than ever. But I lost my feel from 100 and in and I can't score anymore. But hey I look like a scratch on the range. 😅

  14. I have golfers going through this…Their golf swings are so good until they work themselves into a new habit or an old habit comes back. I have an approach to the swing called the Swinging Gate…It is ridiculous for how effective it is and how easy it makes golf. Maybe if I had a new name the Badass Gate To Scratch Golf! Haha something like that. The high school kids rely on me as a crutch instead of playing and working on short game.

  15. The best thing that happened to my game was when my playing partner took lessons to chane from a fade to a draw off the tee. He also has hero ball syndrome, which to be honest has been a nemesis for me too, just not like his. I can live with my scores….and my swing.

  16. most people need more structure. nobody ever told me, in 20 years of golf, that the lead arm makes a slight counterclockwise rotation at the top. Hell, it may be more of a "feel" than an actual movement, but it's the same thing. Et voila, there it is……the last piece of the puzzle in a long journey.

  17. If you play comp for hcp, there is no allowance for age and shorter shot length. The rulers need to allow seniors to hit off social or ladies without hcp penalty. My course has 6 par 4 at over 400y. A perfect 3 wood can still leave me short.

  18. Padraig hit one over 450 in senior open. !! I took note of short game on last liv – just outstanding what they do under 50y often to under 4 feet. Cam smith has new putter as does reed and wyndham has had over 30 putter since first us open win. Yips or something else?

  19. Well, I find it funny is how the greatest golfers of all time from Tiger Woods and on, went through swing changes and then completely either ended up getting injured or sucked and then it took them years to try to get better again. It makes no sense. oh yeah, this is ghost by the way.

  20. In my humble opinion work on the short game, shots from a 100 yards in, chipping pitching and putting, spend any practice time you have on that, and your scores will tumble, quickly.

  21. I think a big thing in golf is instead of chasing a better swing it’s actually chase a better miss and knowing when to follow that.

If your swing is erratic and you are constantly playing army golf then yeah swing mechanics. But if you are producing a one way miss then it’s time to manage that, understand the tendencies that cause it and structure your range time around reducing it rather than messing with your swing.

All the best players in the world have a miss; Tommy gets inside and over draws it, so you see him in the range doing his foam box and alignment stick drill religiously, not to change his swing but to manage his miss!

People’s egos are the final boss in golf not every shot needs to be perfect to score because managing your miss will lower your handicap far faster than trying to make more birdies.
