Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin was in a four-way tie for fourth, seven strokes behind leader Jenny Shin of South Korea, halfway through the Women’s Scottish Open.
Coughlin, ranked 22nd in the world, fired a 66 Thursday, sharing the first-round lead with Shin, but shot 74 Friday. She will tee off at 7:15 a.m. Eastern time Saturday.
Shin, ranked 98th in the world, carded a 67 Friday and leads second-place Esther Henseleit of Germany by five strokes.
Chesterfield golfer reaches U.S. Junior Amateur final
Noah Maclauchlan, 18, of Chesterfield County advanced to the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship match-play final at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Maclauchlan, a left-hander and Cosby High graduate who will play for Liberty University, qualified 49th by firing a combined 3-over-par 144 on a pair of courses. Since then, he has beaten five opponents, including top-seeded Brayden Jones 2 and 1 in Thursday’s round of 16.
Friday, Maclauchlan won 4 and 2 against Kuan Zhou of Houston and then 1-up over New Zealand’s Cooper Moore.
In the championship match at 8 a.m. Saturday, he will take on co-medalist Miles Russell, 17, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
Maclauchlan was added to the field as the first alternate from the qualifying site at Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club in Portsmouth. He got elevated when Rawlin Sutter, another Elizabeth Manor qualifier, became fully exempt by capturing the Alabama Boys State Junior for the second consecutive year.
Maclauchlan’s younger brother, Liam, was the medalist at the same qualifier but did not advance into the bracket, shooting 10-over 151 for two rounds.
Nobody at 6 over or worse made the cut.
BASEBALL
Pilots make up ground with victory at Tri-City
The Peninsula Pilots gave their playoff hopes a large boost Friday night, defeating the Tri-City Chili Peppers 7-3 at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.
The Pilots (21-20) pulled to within a game of Tri-City (20-17) for the East Division’s third and final berth in the Coastal Plain League’s Petitt Cup playoffs. The regular season is set to finish next weekend.
Peninsula, which has won 12 of its last 14 games, pulled ahead to stay, 3-2, with a three-run third inning. Tyler Zedalis’ two-run homer in the ninth helped seal the triumph.
He finished with two homers for the night, and his Old Dominion teammate Efrain Morales was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Jack Pokorak also had two of the Pilots’ nine hits.
Tri-City’s Rory Finn socked a two-run homer in the second off starter Walker Fuller (4-1), who bounced back to gain the victory by lasting five innings. Buddy Baker threw two hitless innings before fellow relievers Yasseel Samboy and Olvis Genao finished the game.

Jenkins, AfterShocks advance in TBT
Former Menchville High and Old Dominion guard Chaunce Jenkins and his Wichita State alumni teammates advanced in The Basketball Tournament with a 73-67 home victory over New Mexico’s alumni team, The Enchantment, at Charles Koch Arena to win their series 2-1.
The rest of the annual winner-take-all tourney, whose champions will split $2 million, will be a single-elimination event.
The defending champion AfterShocks will play host to JHX Hoops, a Kansas Jayhawks alumni squad, in an in-state showdown at 9 Eastern on Monday night in an Alumni bracket semifinal/overall quarterfinal.
The first Alumni semifinal, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, will feature Boeheim’s Army (of Syracuse) against La Familia (of Kentucky) in Lexington.
Each alumni team is allowed four “portal players” (non-alums).
Former VMI standout QJ Peterson came through in his first season with the AfterShocks, sinking the winning 3-pointer Friday to reach the Elam Ending target score (72) in a 73-67 victory. Peterson had 16 points, and Marcus Keene had 23 for the AfterShocks. A third AfterShocks “portal player,” Marcus Santos-Silva (formerly of VCU and Texas Tech) had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Six non-alumni teams are competing in another bracket. The championship game will feature the non-alumni survivor visiting the arena of the top alumni team.
Jenkins struggled Friday, collecting three points and five fouls in 10 minutes off the bench. Three of those fouls came in rapid succession.
In Game 2, which Enchantment won 73-67, Jenkins had eight points, three rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes. In Game 1, a 98-77 AfterShocks rout, Jenkins had four points and three rebounds.
Jenkins played two seasons for Wichita State, then two for ODU and one for Seton Hall (2024-25). He averaged 11.2 points in his career, including 14.7 with ODU. In 2025-26, he played his first pro season with the Maccabi Rishon LeZion team in Israel, averaging 9.8 points, 2.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds in five games.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
ODU recruit helps Canada take silver
Incoming Old Dominion freshman Ashlyn Gent of Calgary, Alberta, helped her native Canada take the silver medal at the NORCECA U21 Pan-American Cup in Columbus, Ohio.
In group play, Canada defeated Mexico 3-2 and Venezuela 3-0 before dropping a 3-1 decision to the U.S.
In the championship bracket, Canada won 3-0 over Belize and the Dominican Republic before losing 3-0 to the U.S. in the final.
LITTLE LEAGUE
Western Branch Juniors fall in Southeast first round
In the Shenandoah Valley, host Bridgewater Community won 15-2 in a Southeast Region Junior first-round game over Virginia champion Western Branch.
The Chesapeake team will look to bounce back at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game against West Virginia champion Barboursville.
York County Seniors fall to Georgia softball team
State champion York County’s Senior League softball team began play in the Southeast Regional in Clarksville, Tennessee, with an 8-2 loss to Georgia state champion Hart County.
York will play a 7:30 p.m. elimination game Saturday against North Carolina state champion Northwest Forsyth American, a Winston-Salem area team.
In the age 8-10 baseball state tournament in Front Royal, Virginia Beach and Bennett’s Creek advanced the farthest among area teams, falling in the quarterfinals.
Virginia Beach was 2-1 in pool play, winning 12-1 over Cave Spring and 21-2 against Honaker before losing 8-5 to Annandale/North Springfield. Virginia Beach was eliminated with a 4-2 quarterfinal loss to Bedford.
Bennett’s Creek lost 4-3 to Fort Hunt of Northern Virginia, then edged Coeburn 8-7 and Bedford 3-2. In the quarterfinals, Bennett Creek lost 11-2 to Annandale/North Springfield.
In the age 9-11 baseball tournament in Purcellville, Virginia Beach also was a quarterfinalist. It lost 3-0 to Vienna National and 19-12 to Tuckahoe American in pool play before defeating Lee 15-5. West Springfield ousted Virginia Beach 19-1 in a quarterfinal.
York County also was 1-2 in pool play.
In the Major baseball tournament in Fairfax, Virginia Beach was 2-1 in pool play before dropping a quarterfinal 11-2 to Falls Church Kiwanis.
In pool play, Virginia Beach lost 11-1 to West Springfield before defeating Bennett’s Creek 9-4 and York County 11-1. York was 1-2 in pool play.
