The annual NEPA Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament will be held Monday, Aug. 10 at Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf Twp. The event will bring together coaches community leaders and sports personalities for one of Northeast Pennsylvania’s premier charitable events in the fight against cancer.
Former Hazleton Area High School boys’ basketball coach and Bucknell Hall of Famer Mike Joseph is the the chairman for this year’s event. He is helping lead an event that is one of the region’s most successful fundraising traditions.
Since its inception nearly two decades ago, the NEPA Coaches vs. Cancer program has raised approximately $4 million to support the fight against cancer. Former Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep boys coach Andrew Kettel founded the committee in 2006. He has spearheaded the organization for the past 20 years, helping it grow into one of the country’s most impactful Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives.
Participants will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of college basketball coaches, including Bucknell men’s basketball coach John Griffin, Bucknell women’s basketball coach Trevor Woodruff, Lafayette College men’s basketball coach Mike McGarvey, new Lafayette’s new women’s basketball coach Ben O’Brien, and Le Moyne College’s Nathan Champion. The discussion should touch on the upcoming college basketball season, recruiting, leadership and the evolving landscape of the game. Bob Ide of FOX 56 will be the panel’s moderator.
Hazleton native and World Series-championship manager Joe Maddon will be among the tournament participants.
