Living in Japan when tourism start booming before COVID and exploded after, some cities like nearby Kyoto certainly are straining with the huge influx of travelers. When I guide people around, we try to bring them to locations away from the most popular spots, but many tourists needing a guide are on their first visit and do want to see those popular spots they saw on social media. It is a hard balance to reach.
What is happening with UTMB is what happened to Ironman in Whistler, BC. Community loved it at first. Then it grew too big. Community got tired of it. There is a middle ground to shrink the event and enhance the experience for everyone.
