Played a practice round after work and chunked my tee shot into the trees on a short par 4.
Hit a provisional, flushed a high-cut 3 iron that looked perfect… then carried on after finding my first ball and lagged my long par put to a foot, only then did I realise the provisional had gone in.
So the scorecard says 5, but I made a hole-in-one that counted for nothing!

Pain.
Looks like a hole in one to me. Provisional or not. Edit: Scorecard should say 5 yes. But you still hit a ball from the tee box into the hole in 1 shot and most people will never do that no many how many balls they hit.
Similar thing happened to another person who posted here recently about a par 3, and the answer there was the same. You played it correctly. Once you found your original ball, you are *forced* to play the original, and the provisional is a “wrong ball” that mustn’t be played.
But there’s a loophole. After hitting your provisional, you are allowed to not look for your original ball (and the rules even state you are allowed to request that your playing partners not look for your original ball) so that you can play the provisional.
If you’d done that here after hitting your provisional so well, you could’ve played it and taken the 3.
Nice bird!
If it’s any consolation, it’s a better story than just saying “I had a hole in one once”
Saved yourself one hell of a bar bill 😂
I don’t think you can actually hit a provisional unless out of bounds is a possibility. Were there white stakes involved?
Huh. Gallery rule 3? In a tourney you would know it went in and never search for the 1st one. It’s a silly rule but you can elect to not search or stop a search
For the people that didn’t read the post. The provisional went in off the tee. Thats never going to be a hole in one. Now, yes it’s incredibly cool that you hit from the tee box into the hole. Especially on a par 4. But I’m sorry, it’s still a three.
That’s a 3.
Yall can crucify me for this. But the score on your card does not matter at the end of the day. Did you hole out from the tee box on par 4? Yes. Did the score that almost everyone who plays golf fibs or breaks a rule once or multiple times per round get a little bit worse? Yeah, but who cares? You holed out from a par 4 tee box. Thats a hio in my book.
What’s this par 4 that you’re hitting long irons into from the tee? Some ridiculous dogleg?
Tap it in!! You pay to play golf…. Not get paid to play golf… Nice birdie… take your shot of birdie juice!!!🥃🍹🍻
even if you never found ball 1, you didn’t make a hole in one. You’d have made a 3.
technically it would have been a hole in 3…
I think short might be underselling the diminutive nature of this par 4

To many lies in this story.
1. That he made a “hole in one”
2. This person still carries a 3 iron. Most new irons do not make a matching 3 iron
3. You made a “hole in one” on a par 4 with a 3 iron. You don’t give us any stats about the hole. Unlikely to hit a 3 iron far enough on a par 4 for an ace
If true good on you for marking your actual score
That’s golf babyyyyy
Gallery rule
How short of a par 4 are you playing that you can reach with an iron??
I think there should be a hole in one on provisional clause, in the rare event this happens take the lowest score. Congratulations on the awesome shot and move on.
Nice Par!! 🤣
How short is the par 4 if you are hitting a 3 iron?
*hole in 3
not very familiar with all the rules but surely you can say something along the lines of taking stroke and distance off the tee and that would be 3 right?
