U. SAUCON TWP., Pa. – Some of the region’s best young golfers are hitting the green Monday in Lehigh County, with a championship on the line.
It’s the 78th junior amateur golf championship teeing off. 69 News Reporter Sydney Kay has more about the tournament in Upper Saucon Township.
Stroke play at the Old and Grace Courses will tee off Monday and Tuesday, according to the Saucon Valley Country Club website. Match Play at the Old Course will take place from Wednesday through Saturday.
The Championship is free and open to spectators, the website says. Gates will open one hour before the first tee time each day.
The Weyhill Golf Course will still be open for club members.
Mike Wood, Director of Golf at the Saucon Valley Country Club, said 264 of the best players in the world under the age of 19 will be competing. Tiger Woods’ son Charlie will be among the competitors!
“We’re excited” to host the event, he said.
The planning for the event goes all the way back to 2023, when the country club learned it would be hosting this week’s tournament.
Almost 600 volunteers pitched in to help the country club’s team set up the event, Wood said. Close to 100 volunteers help tend the green before and after the day’s activities.
The tournament is “three years in the making,” he said.
Wood said 1983 was the last time the club hosted the tournament.
