2015 Open Championship, St Andrews. Marc Leishman was in the clubhouse at 15-under. Zach Johnson had just rolled in a 30-footer on the 72nd to join him. Louis Oosthuizen stood on the last needing a birdie to make it a three-man playoff.
Five years earlier, on this exact course, Oosthuizen had won the Open by seven shots — a margin bettered at the Championship only by Tiger Woods since 1913. He was 54th in the world when he did it. It remains the only PGA Tour victory of his career.
He holed the putt. Then he birdied the first playoff hole. Johnson matched him. All three bogeyed the Road Hole. And on the final extra hole, Oosthuizen’s 12-footer to force sudden death caught the left edge and stayed out.
He has now finished runner-up in all four majors.
