He Hit His Third Shot From The Range

2017 Open Championship, Royal Birkdale. Tied with Matt Kuchar on the back nine, Jordan Spieth pushed his tee shot on the 13th roughly 100 yards right — off the map. The ball hit a spectator in the head and kicked over the far side of a dune, which is why 500 people spent minutes searching in the wrong place.

Then Spieth asked the question that saved his major: is the driving range in play, or out of bounds? It was in play. Which meant he could take his unplayable and go back as far as he wanted. What followed was 22 minutes of chaos, rules officials, and negotiation — ending with Spieth dropping among the equipment trucks, right beside his own sponsor’s truck, 240 yards from the hole.

He hit a 3-iron to the edge of the green and got up and down for bogey. Then birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par. He won by three. The most famous bogey in major championship history.
