How you choose to hold the putter has a huge influence over the quality of the putt. This refers to both your setup and swing. Perfecting the way you are gripping the putter will be one of the best ways to drastically improve your short game without a complete overhaul of your golf swing.
In order to determine your proper grip, hold your putter in front of you ensuring that it remains parallel to the ground and perpendicular with you. While bending your arms at the elbows, try to position the putter shaft in line with your forearm, emulating as if your putter was a part of your body.
While gripping the putter with the palm of your trail hand, be sure to position the grip in your palms instead of on your fingers. This requires positioning the club shaft upon the lifeline within your trail hand.
Then place your lead hand on the grip just above the trail hand. With your index and middle fingers positioned along the length of the putter, tuck your pinky and ring fingers beneath the rear of the club. This has become commonly referred to as two fingers down two fingers around by many golf veterans.
