If you struggle with casting, flipping, or releasing the golf club too early, trying to “hold the lag” in your downswing could actually be making the problem worse.
In this lesson with Roger, we look at why his shaft was leaning back at impact and how changing what happened through and after the golf ball helped him create a much better impact position without trying to force shaft lean.
You’ll see why the way you release the club through the ball can dramatically influence what happens before impact, and why a better release can help you create more lag, better shaft lean, and a more consistent strike.
If you’ve been trying to hold lag, drag the handle, or stop flipping the club, this lesson will give you a very different way to think about your downswing.

  1. ‘Practice isnt always abouT hitting a good shot”….thats the toughest thing for me to grasp when on the range…10-15 balls not going well and i go into panic mode..which inevitably has me reverting to anything to get closer to a useable ball flight..then on the course im in the same boat all over again

  2. I don't understand this lesson. He's releasing way way early. Have him drive the butt of the club down the target line. After that you can work on releasing hands and path direction etc..
Not saying I know anything but I helped some friends pretty quickly this way.

  3. I started trusting the release would work, and it did. I’ve been hitting it dead straight ever since. It took my 8-iron from ~120-125 to 150; a fantastic lesson!

  4. Thanks for the video! Been playing alot more recently and this video help me understand my swing takeaways. And a great pre shot routine for both long clubs into my shorter one. Just need to work on the front leg coiling for more compression. Thanks again!

  5. Just what I needed without getting too technical. Been trying for years to improve my golf swing and get consistent shaft lean. Just tried this technique in the garden and found it more natural and unlocked my wrists. Can't wait to try it on the course. More simple instruction like this for high handicap golfers please. Thanks

  6. Love these lessons. The emphasis on releasing the club is the key. I have recently had a mini-breakthrough because I've stopped trying to drag the handle and I am instead making sure the club doesn't get stuck behind me. I like the feeling of getting the club to "tip out" early. There was too much focus on creating shaft lean and swinging inside to out, and I think it's hurt a lot of golfers. Great job as always guys.
