Great setup. Similar to my current.
Driver-12*, 7w-21*,6h-29*, 7i-35*, 9i-43*, GW-52 and and 58*w
Great video. Playing again after 35 yrs now, every club seems to go about the same distance…maybe I could carry less clubs lol. back to the practice range.
Hmm, you’re starting out with 14 clubs and no putter? FWIW, I’ve played with 13 clubs for at least the last 7-8 years. I don’t feel like I need an extra wood, hybrid or wedge and if I put a 3-iron back in the bag then I’ll be tempted to hit it.
TAG made a video months ago that I am only just now appreciating the genius of it. Cutting down a 10k driver to 3 wood length and jacking up the loft to 12 degrees. In fact, ping HQ in arizona got wind of it and brought out a new product based on those specs. They call it…….the "thriver". I'm lovin' it. It's a fairway finder.
I’ve been using a similar setup in my carry bag for the last year or so for my casual rounds: D(12*), 4h(21*), 6i, 8i, PW(42*), GW(52*), and putter. I’ll swap different clubs in and out of the mix just for fun. I also have a full set of 2003 Adams Idea Irons I like to play with from time to time.
I'm confused, I thought you had switched to ELEVEN hybrids?
I find I play better going back to my full bag when I spend some time playing with a half set. mini driver, 7W, 9W, 6I, 8I, PW, SW, P in my half set.
Quite right too.
5W, 5H, 7,8,9,PW, SW, putter.
Depending on course and conditions I mat swap a couple, but NEVER add them.
I can carry these comfortably at 67 and a bit smashed up.
Still Cat 1 though (just) thanks to the short game.
I wouldn’t fault anyone for reducing their bag. But there is one club I would absolutely add – a club you don’t care about getting dinged up. I bought a Desert 🌵 club from PXG. Built to take a pounding out of the dreadful lies.
As a “half setter” myself this is great for the game. Less clubs leads to more creativity and allows for walking the course. I play 13* Spoon, 23* seven wood, 5, 7, 9, SW, Putter. This set up allows me to cover all the course efficiently and maintain a single digit handicap in my late 50’s. Golf is a simple game if you have a simple set and a purpose for every club in the bag. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
Thing is, I paid money for all those clubs. I will admittedly go through rounds without using some of the clubs in the bag, but the next time those clubs may have busy days. Basically, I like my clubs and it almost feels mean leaving some home.🙂
Excellent
i'm starting to feel TAG's preaching on high numbered woods. i just tried a ping 9 wood and for the first time in my life i felt genuine confidence in getting a high ,decently long fairway shot consistently. Just to know i can get 190 yards and stick it on any green, no matter how hard, is something i never had before.
Very intriguing video, great stuff Andy! Going to do my own version with my Ping G10's! Even while I am thinking now, the 4 and 5 iron can go straight away
What’s your go to club for green side bunkers? This is what I’m still trying to fill.
Driver, 9 Wood, 6H (150 yards), 7i to Gw covers 140 to 90 Yards, 54 wedge, SW option TBD, putter.
5 clubs for me: mini driver, cobra 4h, 7hybrid, sand wedge, putter
I often play with less than 14. Not as low as 8 (with putter) but I reckon you're spot on with what you actually need. My half set would be identical from 6 iron down. My top 3 are Mini Driver, 3 Hybrid and 5 Hybrid (prefer hybrids to woods). Reckon I'll give the half set a go next time I play.
Thought provoking mate like that always looking to make the game simpler def got too many clubs in my bag and that's just standard 14 also good if you like to walk the course aint getting any younger simpler means less weight to carry and a more enjoyable round, cheers
I took out m 5 wood and 5 iron and knocked 5 shots off my previous weeks score, I had 10 clubs in the bag. watching with interest on how to remove a few more clubs for this sweltering summer (ball travelling much further at the moment)
Driver, 5i, 7i, p, 54, flatstick
8 clubs would be playable for me, driver, 7 wood, 5 hybrid, 7,9,PW, 56 and putter.
Thnks Andy- going to set up my spare bag like this. Note old 5 woods a re 21* same as todays 7.
I’ve been thinking about this very thing. I’m 69 yo and in good health. Index 8.1. My setup would (will) probably look like this: Driver 10.5 40g shaft, 7-wood, 11-wood, 15-wood, 9-iron, GW, SW, Chipper (Odyssey X-Act Tank), Putter (LAB Golf DF-2.1). Okay, that’s nine clubs, but the chipper and putter are non-negotiable.
2hy, 7wood, 5hy, 7i, 9i, 48*, P
All I've played for years shooting mid-80s: PW-6 Iron, 23 deg Hybrid, 52 deg wedge, Driver, Putter.
I recently took your advice and got a 12 degree driver. I'm hardly ever the longest in my group, but I'm just about always in the fairway!
