If You Struggle With Chipping, Just Do This Before Every Shot

If You Struggle With Chipping, Just Do This Before Every Shot

You can practise chipping for hours…

…and still stand over one simple shot wondering whether it’s going to be thin, fat… or perfect.

That uncertainty destroys confidence around the greens.
One bad chip turns into two. Before long, you’re trying to guide the club instead of trusting it.
The frustrating part is, you’re probably trying to do exactly what feels natural.

And that’s the very thing making chipping so difficult.

In this short game lesson, Danny Maude shows you the one chipping technique that works for 70–80% of chip shots around the green—from tight lies to thick rough. It’s a simple change in the way you think about the shot that encourages your body to produce clean, consistent contact without filling your head with technical positions.

If you’ve ever struggled with fat chips, thin chips or simply lost confidence around the greens, I think this simple golf lesson could really help.

In this video you’ll learn

✅ Why most golfers struggle with chipping (even after practising)

✅ The hidden mistake that causes fat and thin chip shots

✅ Why better golfers use loft very differently from amateurs

✅ A simple movement that almost forces great contact

  1. Watching the last section of this video reminded me of an area I really struggle with – getting the ball out of long grass and back into play – ideally in one shot! Have you done a video covering techniques to achieve this?

  2. Great video. The other big problem I have when chipping with the 60 degree is cutting completely under the ball and the ball goes nowhere. Especially in higher grass. Delofting the 60 degree is an interesting technique I haven’t considered, especially after opening the face even more. It seems counterintuitive, but that is golf. I also try to make sure I strike the ball with the fattest part of the face (away from the shaft) to reduce the chance of cutting under the ball.

  3. What do you do if you have tight lie? I play on public golf courses without nice manicured fluffy fairways and aprons. The grass. can be quite short and sometimes rutty or uneven. How does this technique apply to this?

  4. Contd: I think lots of young guys(ie current tour players) were taught using 60 degree wedges so they've adapted and are good at it. Im 78 and did not learn on a 60 degree. I learned with a PW, 9, or 8 iron. Im pretty good with them and i dont have to do all the changes.

  5. Loved your lesson and the thumbs down method of squaring the club naturally. I was a "flicker", but used the more square method in my last 2 rounds and wow what an improvement! Thank you!

  6. I love the top-down camera angle of the shot (a golfer's eye view?!), showing how the hands and club face travel through impact. That's a big help in understanding the concept.
