April 2021, Valero Texas Open. Jordan Spieth had not won a golf tournament in 1,351 days. Once the No. 1 player in the world and hailed as the next Tiger Woods, he’d lost his swing, nearly fallen out of the world’s top 100, and spent four years chasing the form that once made him a three-time major champion before age 24.
Then, in his home state of Texas, he closed with a 66 and held off Charley Hoffman to win by two. He sealed it with a 5-foot birdie on the 17th. “This is a monumental win for me,” he said. “It’s been a long road. There were a lot of times I didn’t know I would be here.” It came the week before the Masters — a full-circle return for one of golf’s most gifted players.
