If you’ve been struggling to hit your long irons consistently or find yourself coming up short on approach shots, it might be time to rethink your bag setup. In this video, Coach Ed Schwent (The Golf Sensei) shows why a 7-wood and 9-wood can be game changers — especially for golfers over 50 or anyone with moderate swing speeds.

Watch as Ed compares a 6-iron, 6-hybrid, and 9-wood side by side to reveal the differences in launch angle, descent angle, and forgiveness. The results speak for themselves — the 9-wood launches higher, lands softer, and holds greens like a pro. Plus, it’s much easier to hit solidly, even on mishits.

If you want to fly over bunkers, stop the ball quickly on the green, and gain confidence with your long approach shots, this video will show you exactly why adding a 7-wood or 9-wood to your bag could be one of the smartest changes you ever make.

  1. Longer the club the harder to flush it though …for me ,typically ,anyways..though around the 5i some times ,and 4i a lot more often ,are pretty bad compared to my 7w, 5w,and usually even 3w with good contact lately ..

  2. I am 62, living with cancer and had major back surgery as a result of the cancer. I lost 75 -100 yards on my driver (probably more) when I resumed playing after two years. I have had to rethink everything I do off of the tee on par 3's or on the fairway. I bought a 7 and 9 wood for one reason: sweeping vs getting too steep on my irons and mishitting them. I want to feel an easy swing on each shot using the driver, 3,5,7,9 woods. I am practicing with 8 or 9 irons from 100-125 yards to not feel any stress. My putting is average at best. My goal each round: hit it straight, no sore muscles the next morning by swinging easy, and no double bogeys. Like all younger guys my goal used to be bomb the driver and go from there. No more of that.

  3. Thanks for posting this video. My new set has 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 woods. The new woods are all longer. If my tempo is right, I have gained yardage as you say in the video. I do carry a 6 iron as well. 7, 8, 9 and 4 wedges. Putter. I have seen about 10 more yards with the stronger iron lofts also. I like the new higher loft woods more than my old hybrid clubs.

  4. I just got fit for a 9 wood yesterday with PXG. Mega forgiving, super tight dispersion and steep descent angle. What's not to love? My 7wood from pxg is already my favorite club in my bag, so I figured why not let the party continue? I'm 44, I carry my 9w 175, total 185 yards. I have never got a 10 yard differential between my carry and total from that distance. I can't wait until next summer! Picked up golf 4 years ago and I'm no athlete. I think I swung my 9w at 85 mph.

  5. When I bought my new set, I purchased a 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 wood. The woods are much easier to hit than my old hybrids. At least for me they are. After watching this, I found a matching 11 wood online in like new condition. I tried it at an indoor sim / range today. It's going in the bag. Thanks for the advice and excellent videos. Just an additional thought: Descent angle with my new irons was an issue. I gained yardage, but didn't always stick approach shots. The 7, 9, 11 woods stop on the green and carry. My swing speed is in the 70 to 80 range at age 72.

  6. So I've become a believer I'm 71 and my WITB looks nothing like it did ten years ago. I carry driver, three, five, seven & nine! metals. 7-8-9-PW with an A wedge plus 52 +58 degree wedges. Not only has it improved my trajectory (and score!) my yardage gapping is better them it has ever been. I worry less about which club to hit because I know the yardages and the height stops the shots from running off the back. I play in a league with a lot of younger guys that I see flailing 3 irons into the jungle… they have started to take note of what's in "the old man's bag" and thinking "mmmm Is that why he's beating us?" 🙂

  7. I am 61 yrs old and just traded my 3 and 4 irons for 5 and 7 woods without any change in distance, it is almost like cheating hitting those woods. Seriously thinking about getting rid of 5 iron and getting a 9 wood.

  8. I added a 7 wood early on in 2025 and loved it so much that I added the 9 wood. Love both clubs but they replace 3-4 irons for me. Only scenario I can see the 9 wood not in the bag is when I go to Scotland to play after going to The Open at Royal Birkdale in July. I've never played true links golf like I will be over there and know the wind will play a factor for that club. If I learn to hit a 9 wood low, I'll keep it in the bag for that trip. Would love to hear some others thoughts on this.

  9. I'm 26 years old, and a 20 handicap and i carry apart from the obvious driver, 3 wood/5 wood, I don't carry the 4 and 5 irons anymore replacing them with the 7&9 woods, and its like a cheat code those woods. longest iron is the 6 iron, and i refuse to get rid of that club.

  10. I bought a used 11 wood couple weeks ago. Absolutely love it! Also have a 3,5, and 7. I'm actually more comfortable with these than with long irons or hybrids.

  11. I can’t wait til 2027 ..rumors are they will introduce an even better cheat code …the 11 and 13 ‘wood wedges’ for bunker and short game.
