SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – A Trinity sixth grader has won one of the area’s biggest golf trophies, becoming the youngest champion in the history of the Greater South Bend Women’s Metro.
Paige Sweikar fired matching rounds of 76 to claim the 99th edition of the tournament. She said competing against older players pushed her to improve.
“It was a little bit intimidating but at the end I always have fun playing with them and it always shows me what I can improve on,” Sweikar said. “I have learned quite a bit from them and all my mistakes that I can help make me better.”
Sweikar credited her brothers for helping shape her game at an early age.
“My brothers always used to play all these tournaments and I just one day decided I wanted to play myself,” she said. “They help me out a lot and they always tell me tips and stuff that can make me better.”
Sweikar also competes at the national level, including at Pinehurst for a U.S. Kids Championship.
“Probably this one. I really like this one a lot. And I go to Pinehurst for a U.S. Kids Championship and I always love playing down there,” she said.
Bruno’s Pizza in downtown South Bend recognized Sweikar’s accomplishment by gifting her one free pizza a month for the rest of the year.
