A Battle Royale between the 7 wood, Hybrid and the long iron.
Which one of these longer golf clubs should you play and why?
Is there a specific club that benefits your game more than the other and should you look out for a certain danger sign when choosing one of these options.
In this video I’m going to deep dive into all the areas you should consider when picking your long end of the bag and how you will be best placed to set up each club in terms of lie angle, swing weight and face angle.

Taylormade needs to make a version of the Callaway Heaven wood. I just put one in the bag and it replaced my qi35 7wood. Such a good club. if TM had one, I'd buy. And if you get an idea to make it from this comment, i'll take one please!
7 wood. I'm a total convert, and mine is a cheap second hand one. But it's so good and easy to use!
Personally I go 3 Iron GAPR Lo, then Supersteel 7 wood (the only thing I could get a hold on without spending a gazillion dollars), and finally 5 hybrid. Now the irons are single length so the 5H is more for gapping than anything. However, it has offset which can get snagged in deeper rough. May swap it out for the regular 5 iron single length head as I have the speed or a cobra one length hybrid. They don't have offset so the leading edge can cut through grass properly.
Do you play your 7 wood at standard loft? I’m in between 5 wood and 7 wood for my gapping. Wondering if I should play a weaker 5 wood or stronger 7 wood. I like both at 42 inches
I just have less mishits with the hybrid. For me it is safer than a fairway wood.
I always get excited when I have the chance to hit my 7 wood for my approach on a par 5. Easily my go to favorite club in the bag
I found many years ago that given my swing speed and attack angle I could reliably hit any style of iron down to about 21 degrees of loft but the sweet spot for consistency and accuracy was at 24 degrees. So, leaving my longest standard iron at 24 which depending on the set is usually a 5 iron these days (used to be a 4 iron) I experimented from there. Longer shafts and hitting consistently off the ground are and were a challenge so 3 wood was eliminated a very long time ago. So I ended up with a somewhat consistent 5 wood and a 4 hybrid. But when much easier to hit driving style irons became the rage I dropped the 4 hybrid for a 20 degree Ping crossover. Then several quality DTC brands with much more weighting adjust-ability came out and so I got a new 5 wood and shortened the length to 41.5" and a 7 wood shortened to 40.75". And magic was manifest! Very few mishits and long second shots or in between tee shots were now routinely easy and repeatable. Overall I found a modern 21 degree iron still comes in handy so I have irons 21 degree through 58 degree, driver, 5 and 7 wood and putter. Two clubs do one job the rest do a lot. Works for me and finding what works for you is what people need to experiment with. Forget all the advice about you needs hybrids or you should use a zero torque putter or play a certain iron based on your handicap. Hit the freaking clubs and find out what works for you.
Contrary to the popular notions, I find the hybrid far more difficult to hit than my 4i. Earlier, when I had less speed, the hybrid was the easier club, but now, I struggle with it and hit my irons more consistently, with less dispersion on my mishits. My next club is 5W, but since playing around the setup of my bag, I should look at the gapping.
I'll never give up my 7 wood.
I go 4 wood – 7 wood – 5i and I've never been happier with my gapping.
My problem is it doesn’t fit my gapping
Ever since i bought my 7 wood i fallen in love. I hit that thing from 220 to 240 . I hada a big gap therer that ir filled nicely. I ran the 4 iron too for those 200 to 220 shots.
Huge 7wood 9wood fan here.
Have not played woods in the 18 – 21 degree loft profile for 15 years – I played hybrids. This year acquired a Qi35 7 wood; Tensei Black 85 X, tipped 1.5", cut down .75' shorter, changed the TSS weight from 6 to 12gr. Mirrors exactly what you mentioned vis-a vis the comparison between the hybrid and the iron at corresponding loft. The club is fantastic; should have done this years ago. In my mind its a 3 iron replacement that is easy to elevate and spin . Great content, thanks for the information you provide.
7 wood heaven wood! It’s like the pitching wedge for woods
Going for a fitting this week. I'm a high handicapper that can be a mid handicap once i get playing again for reference. I haven't hit a 4 iron in 20 years, I'm terrible with the hybrid I have now, and I haven't hit a 7 wood. How do I address this with the fitter? In other words, am I really going to know after hitting a handful of balls with each?
The issue is that 7 woods are so expensive. I've just bought a set of irons for the price of a 7 wood. And they're more expensive than used putters and drivers!
Big 7w fan here. I had a 4h but just didn’t click with it the way I’ve clicked with the 7w.
Lefty 7 woods are like finding a four leaf clover
Would it make sense to carry a 7 wood and 4 hybrid?
my 4i goes about 200 and my 7w about 215 so I game both. The 7w is such a cheat code so easy to hit, I've tried a hybrid and the miss was a terrible hook.
The thing that always stings when I watch these videos. You hear about the importance of getting custom fit, what fitters need to account for or consider, like cutting the tip of a shaft is a good example.
And you just think, how the hell do I get a fitting like that? Most fitters can’t even give you a 7 wood with different shafts to try let alone start looking at cutting it down to stiffen the tip.
If anyone knows of a fitter in the south of England who can do even a fraction of what is described in these videos, I’d love to know who / where that is.
7wood is the best option for most golfers ⛳️ the hybrids just don’t offer the distance or workability
@Trottie, it seems you even hit your 7 farther than your 3, or at least carry it farther? I was struggling to follow how you put up the numbers in these two head to head videos, bit it looks like the top of your bag is too bunched…
If you can hit a 4i well, then I feel like you should use it. In general, loft for loft irons are the safer bet, but I do understand some people struggle hitting the long irons. In that case, hybrid or wood for sure. In my case, I forced myself to train long irons never intending to play them on course, but to improve my ball striking over all. I have however and as a result, realized that irons are truly the best option if you have good ballstriking with them.
the issue I have personally is that my 7 wood goes like 230 carry (Ai smoke max ; spins abysmally low around 3k but lands soft) ; its basically my 5 wood. So I hit my 5 iron 190 and I have a 40 yard gap to fill…. for that reason I have been eyeing getting a 205-210 club into play that I can take abit off the swing ; maybe the 5/4 hybrid would be the ticket.
so a 5wood and a 4 iron, got it
wish they still made the sim2 max 7wood
as a golfer that started less than a year ago, my long irons just dont have any distance. my 7 wood goes 165 carry with some roll out, and my 5 and 3 wood are all appropriately gapped. My 6-5-4 iron good luck. i just cant seem to get the speed and contact consistently like my woods.
That camera noise is obnoxious in ear buds btw
