As part of my YouTube series “Ten lessons every golfer should know”, the sixth Paddy’s Golf Tip is on chipping, which is in two parts.
In this first installment, I explain the fundamentals of chipping – keeping all the weight on the left side, hitting the ball first and then the turf. I demonstrate how to use a simple training aid to teach those basics, how to use ground force effectively and explain why good chipping helps make you a better iron player, allows you to go for more pins and ultimately improve your scores.
I also demonstrate how to learn to play a simple lob shot, initially using a tee peg to “fresh air” the shot!

First let’s go
Good stuff, you're like an encylopedia. Full of knowledge!
Thank you! I needed a chipping lesson after todays disastrous round.
Thanks. While we are at it, please dig deeper in the next lesson as how to generate and control spins/ releases with different shot shapes of chipping and pitching. Thank you, Sir!
Can you say what stops one tugging longer chips left on contact?
Thanks, Parraig, This is great, I'm putting this in my game.
Its crazy the difference pushing up makes with the lead leg. It took my contact from horrible to flush. Practiced it a bit and hit 12 straight balls within 5 feet of the pin from 25 yards.
Don’t know if you respond to comments, but it would be great if you would comment on your stamps and ball position when you chip
That’s stance
Ho hoooooo! This was a particularly good one Paddy. Thank you! I'd love to see a video about (in the full swing) the difference between 'trying to lift the ball' vs. properly hitting down/compressing the ball. It is a plague of so many amateurs (even very accomplished amature players) , which I believe is from a lack of understanding.
Excellent advice on technique as usual. A short video on reading the lie would be appreciated, meaning does technique or approach to the shot change with tight lies, a little grass behind the ball, or deep rough. Do the different lies change club selection?
Honestly, when I'm on the range or course, Paddy and Tommy Fleetwood are the voices I most like to hear in my head. WWPD and WWTD! Thank you!
Pearls of wisdom yet again , thank you Paddy !
Absolutely great tips, I’ve got out and have done a much better job with contact. It would be great to see a video on short chip shots where you have three feet of green and only about 5 yards to the hole. It is a very short sided shot but how would your technique work with this.
Thanks Paddy- more pearls of wisdom 👌

The simple and obvious solution is for the UK is to join the single market. Reforms proposals are unachievable.
