The roar at TPC River Highlands reached its peak when Viktor Hovland rolled in a birdie on the 18th to seize the solo lead. A sea of Norwegian flags and jerseys waved as fans chanted his name, turning the Travelers Championship into a festival for Norwegian fans.
After his round, Hovland smiled and expressed his gratitude for the unexpected gallery.
In a video posted by the PGA TOUR on X, Viktor Hovland said, “[The] atmosphere was absolutely electric out here today. It was really cool to see some Norwegian jerseys out there, and it was a blast to play in front of everyone today.”
The support seemed to fuel his play throughout the week.
The highlight of their celebration came later on Saturday afternoon, when the Norwegian fans sat together in single file on the golf course and began rowing at the same time.
“We’re Vikings,” Hovland said, according to the PGA Tour. “It’s kind of in our DNA. It’s kind of funny. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen it. I think that’s the first time we’ve ever done it, especially in the World Cup. It took us 1,000 years to figure it out. Yeah, I think it’s pretty cool.”
The unique atmosphere at TPC River Highlands is a direct byproduct of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Thousands of Norwegian soccer supporters have flooded the U.S. Northeast to watch Norway’s national soccer team compete in their first World Cup since 1998.
Hovland and fellow Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan also showed their support for their national soccer team during Norway’s 3-2 win over Senegal.

Hovland spent much of 2026 battling swing inconsistencies and struggling to find comfort off the tee.
After suffering a neck injury at the 2025 Ryder Cup that temporarily sidelined him, he earned only two top-10 finishes in his first 13 starts of the season.
But TPC River Highlands has always been a special place for Hovland. After winning the 2018 U.S. Amateur and low amateur honors at both the Masters and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, he made his professional debut here back in 2019.
And now, just one week after missing the cut at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, he fired a career-low 9-under-par 61 at the second round of the tournament in front of his homeland crowd.
It matched his previous career-best round from the 2023 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, a tournament he went on to win. On Saturday, Hovland stayed locked in and fired a 6-under-par 64 with seven birdies.
And now with only one day remaining, Hovland enters Sunday’s final round as the solo leader at 20-under-par, one-stroke lead over World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
“You know, it’s been a while since I’ve been in this position,” Hovland said in the same interview with the PGA Tour. “You know, to go head-to-head against the best player in the world and pull off some great shots, it was just a lot of fun.”
Sunday now looms as the decisive test, with Hovland needing one more composed round to convert his lead into victory.
