To find out, we put Matt through a completely blind driver shaft test using four shafts that couldn’t be much more different:
🔴 Aldila Voodoo XVS7 X-Stiff – A legendary “old but gold” shaft that Matt gamed for years and believed nothing could beat.
🟣 Diamana WB 63 X – A premium aftermarket shaft built for stronger, faster swings.
🟡 Project X Titan 70g 6.5 – Titleist’s offering of a modern low-spin stock shaft.
🔵 Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Red 55g Regular – A lightweight stock shaft aimed at smoother swing speeds.
Matt had absolutely no idea which shaft he was hitting—and after every shot, he had to commit to exactly which shaft he believed it was based purely on feel, ball flight and performance.
Could he identify the premium aftermarket shaft?
Would his old favourite, the Aldila Voodoo XVS7 still stand up against modern technology?

What I learned is that guys with solid swings, consistent tempo, and hit it in the center get pretty good results overall with different shafts.
I had the voodoo shaft for a while, same left tendency for me to 😕
All fittings should be blind for the hitter! Would love to see this for power handicap golfers etc. obviously fitter knows what colour is what etc
even though the shaft brands were known, a truely blind test to see which one was the best fit. This type of fitting removes all biases and leaves the customer only to focus on good swings. Would be nice if the club heads could be handled the same way. Well done fellas
So, basically, no reason to upgrade is what I’m seeing. There is as much variation almost within a few swings of the same shaft as there is between alternative shafts, and that could be golfer variation, not shaft imprecision. I think the only way to have a true test would be with a swing robot but we already have our answer.

This channel is so much better than the old TXG channel and the new Tour Fitting Golf channel. Those guys would never remotely even give this a true test cause it’s taking money out of their pockets
Fun little video but I do wonder what subtle changes the tape made have made to the shafts. 5g added to the weight of each one and how does it affect the flex in all the sections of the shaft?

At last the real story about why you need to be fitted. It is getting the club face where it needs to be at impact based only on how you individually swing the club. At the fitting as they have hundreds of different brands to try they can find that 1 shaft which gets the face square at impact most often.

The only thing I can tell you that I felt and tested a real difference with my TPT Shaft, especially in terms of disburtion and consistency.
so tell me if you buy an upgraded shaft do you get the stock shaft too.
example. titleist gts retail with stock shaft £629 upgraded shaft £300 so total £929 ? so wheres the stock shaft?
Great vid showing the difference between feel/direction consistency and actual numbers. I've hit quite a lot of shafts, and I cant get over how different some feel v actual results. It's certainly worth getting fitted with someone who knows what they are doing.
You should have given him 4 shafts he has never hit before and not given him the names of any of them. The only reason he is picking them out is that he is fully familiar with each one.
