Area Golf: Links golf comes to lakes area with The Farm at Crosswoods – Brainerd Dispatch

CROSSLAKE — Crosswoods Golf Course is adding another nine holes to its golf course.

The Farm, which is set to open for the public Friday, July 10, is the newest golf course to the lakes area.

Located off Highway 3 in Crosslake, Crosswoods Golf Course already is a 27-hole golf course with its Sunrise, High Noon and Sunset nines. The Farm will have its own flavor as a links style course designed by Scott Hoffman.

The Farm is on 80 acres of reclaimed agricultural land with a layout that is unlike the tree-lined design of the original Crosswoods courses.

Mike and Kelly Stone are the owners and operators of Crosswoods. Their daughters are involved with the course with Savannah Nelson, a PGA professional, and Alexandra Mock and her husband Sam as accountants and general managers for the course. Tim Trott is also a PGA professional at Crosswoods.

“The Farm is our new 9-hole links edition,” Nelson said. “It’s a wide open landscape with a lot of prairie gasses, massive waste bunkers and greens that are three or four times as big as our other courses. It’s unique to northern Minnesota and a course that you would see in Nebraska or Kansas. There are not a lot of trees on it and the idea behind it is to make it fun and wide open.”

Nelson added when she and her sister moved back to the Crosslake area and started to have their hands in the Crosswoods business, The Farm became a possibility.

“We wanted to grow roots and this is going to be a family legacy,” Nelson said. “My sister and I are heavily involved with the business and plan to take it over. We are fully invested and wanted to figure out how to make it possible. My dad is part of an investment group and they had owned the land prior to all the ideas of a new course. My dad approached the group about this idea and bought them out of the property.”

The Farm is a fitting name as the land used to be an old farm. There were very few trees cut down to build The Farm, and Nelson said that gives the course a natural feel.

Hoffman is no stranger to designing courses in the lakes area. He is the architect of The Classic at Madden’s, a nationally recognized top 100 course, and more recently The Gravel Pit, a 13-hole par-3 golf course.

“We were super excited to work with him on this project,” Nelson said. “He came out and saw property and was blown away by what he saw. He had a lot of fun designing it. It came together really fast. What we like most is that Scott was local and he knows this area. He’s such a humble guy and he would come out and walk the line. Dan Bieganek was the shaper and he works with the bulldozer and he was here six days a week and deserves a shoutout as well.”

Crosswoods Golf Course now has 36 holes with The Farm. The Farm, Sunrise and High Noon nines are par 36s. The Sunset nine is now a par 32 executive course.

The Farm can be played as a nine hole or 18-hole course. The greens on The Farm are big enough that each green will have two flags in them. The Farm can also be paired with one of the other Crosswoods nine holes.

“There is a white flag and a black flag on each green, so you could go around The Farm twice to play 18,” Nelson said. “With how big the course, it will feel like a different experience. We are using the second half of the summer to see what people want to do with it.”

The par 3 course at Crosswoods is down to three holes and is a part of the practice facility. Nelson is excited about what The Farm brings to golf in the lakes area.

“It’s its own separate experience and a little more exclusive,” Nelson said. “The greens will be some of the biggest in the state and I think people are going to be amazed by the size of this course. Our motto at Crosswoods is that we are always trying to improve and we want to give our guests the best experience possible.”
