Broadhurst will double that tally this Saturday after he and partner Hamish Evans defeated 2021 BG Cup champion Hayward (paired with Mark Stewart) and Abrahams on the second extra hole.
It set up a round of 16 match with 32nd and bottom seeds Kit Goldsmith and Dave Mettrick, who continued the curse of the top qualifiers when they ousted No 1 seeds Ross Chalmers and Manav Garewal.
Goldsmith, who runs the golf club cafeteria, has produced some delicious food on the 19th, and he rustled up equally tasty golf as he fired a Division 2 net-winning 87-18-69 in a 2 and 1 victory.
“My 10 pars were not enough,” lamented 15-handicapper Chalmers as the “curse” was extended to 22 years.
Six of the top 10 seeds were ejected and demoted to the Bryan Cup subsidiary section.
No 3 qualifiers Craig Palmer and Ross Morley lost 3 and 2 to Gray Clapham and Alex Kirkpatrick; Peter Stewart, playing with Kelly Spring, birdied the 19th to beat No 4 Nick Richardson and BG rookie Matt Sutton; Darren Patumaka and Tom Donovan eliminated 2025 top seed giantkillers and No 8-ranked Richard Foon and Neville West on the 18th; Stephen Francks and Dean Robertson sneaked home 1-up over No 9 Ross Gibson and two-time BG champion Barry Brown; and Dudley Meadows was able to go fly fishing after No 10 Tim Sherratt and Peter Humphreys defaulted to Meadows and Nigel Jones.
Matt Henwood and Mike Christophers tossed a flock of birdies at lone wolf qualifying hero Mike Lewin and Craig Morton to be 7-up after nine holes, and went on to win 5 and 4.
After the usual carnage that typifies round of 32 action, only three players who have savoured past BG glory remain.
Cliff Poole won it in 2010 with Basil Payne and 2011 with the late Peter Goodwin. He is a step closer to a hat-trick after he and Vance Richardson eased past Laurie Owen and 2022 champ Peter Clayton 3 and 2.
Mike Dodgshun won in 2020 with Brian Clarke, and he and 2026 partner Pat Butler cleared their first matchplay hurdle with a 2 and 1 win over Pete Anderson and Marcus Gray.
Pete Stewart is the other survivor, having won it in 2015 with Ron Young.
Other pairs still alive are George Brown and Alister Jennings, dark horses Brad Reynolds and Andy Daube, Shannon Ratima and son Rua, two-time losing finalist Paul Rickard (1995 and 2025) and Brad Morgan, and Brian Read and Murray Smith.

Mike Christophers is hoping to see the Jekyll and Hyde of Matt Henwood this weekend.
On Saturday, Christophers will be more than happy to enjoy the Formula One form of Henwood in their round of 16 Barns-Graham Cup men’s pairs match at Poverty Bay Golf Club.
But on Sunday he wants to witness crash and burn after the pair touch gloves in the quarter-finals of the Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs matchplay.
Christophers and Henwood have combined for the BG Cup, but are opponents in the Te K … Christophers playing alongside Mat Downie; Henwood and Craig Christophers the defending champions.
So it will be BG Cup mate against mate and brother versus brother in a repeat of last year’s Te K final, which Henwood and Craig Christophers emphatically won 6 and 5.
Mike Christophers and Downie knocked out top qualifiers Anthony Pahina and son Shaun on the 19th last weekend to get to the last eight.
Craig Christophers and Henwood beat Rocky Monika and Sefo Fonoti 4 and 3.
Shaun Frame and Josh Adams also needed an extra hole to eliminate Damian Pilitati and John Collier Jnr. They face Kolo Fonohema and Duane Mauheni, who defeated Bailey Matoe and Chris Fox 4 and 3.
Brad Reynolds won’t be winning a third Te K crown, but has a good excuse. Reynolds had to play by himself after partner Luke Hayes had to pull out at the 11th hour.
Glen McKinnon and Derek Craven subsequently disposed of Reynolds 4 and 3 to set up a quarter-final with Darren Kahukoti and head greenkeeper Peter Tamatea, who knocked out Dave Harrison and Phil Nepia 1-up.
There is a Hayes in the quarters. Luke’s brother Josh and Steve Phillips outgunned Reuben Maynard and Matt Rofe 3 and 2, and next take on 2024 Te K champs Heath Tupara and Mike Bond, who ejected Tony Leggett and Zane Boyle 3 and 2.

If Lyall Anania had been playing in a Ryder Cup match on Sunday, the gallery would have gone ballistic.
He wasn’t. His gallery was a row of trees. But the drama was of similar intensity as Anania booked a spot in the Te Kani Pere men’s handicap matchplay final.
Anania beat Tom Hindmarsh on the second extra hole, finishing it in Hollywood blockbuster style by chipping in for birdie.
Awaiting him in the title decider is Andy Nimmo, who, after winning his quarter-final on the 20th, had a more conventional 4 and 3 victory against Tony Sharp in the semis.
Frances Tupara and Kennedy Sarich will duke it out in the final of the women’s equivalent – the McKeague Cup.
Tupara defeated Denise Johnston 3 and 2 in their semi, while Sarich powered past Shelley Robertson 5 and 4.
