Wyndham Clark pulled it off once again.
Clark, after nearly letting a massive six-shot lead slip away, held on late to win the U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon at Shinnecock Hills in New York. Clark posted a 3-over 73 in his final round, which dropped him to 4-under on the week. That was enough to give him a one-shot, wire-to-wire win over Sam Burns and the rest of the field.

As a result, Clark is taking home a $4.5 million check.
The USGA put up a $22.5 million purse, which is a $1 million increase from last season. The purse matched what Augusta National offered for the Masters earlier this season, which is the largest in men’s major championship history. The PGA of America had a $20.5 million purse for the PGA Championship last month. While it’s not known what the British Open will offer next month, it had a $17 million purse last season.
By comparison, the PGA Tour’s signature events typically offer $20 million purses. The Players Championship tops the list at $25 million. The last time the U.S. Open was held at Shinnecock Hills in 2018, Brooks Koepka took home a $2.16 million check for his victory. That was part of a $12 million purse.
Clark has now won five times on his PGA Tour. The victory on Sunday was the second major title, too, following his win at the 2023 U.S. Open in Los Angeles.
