2002 US Open: Tiger Was The Only Man Under Par
The closing holes of Tiger Woods winning the 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black — the first US Open ever played on a true public course, billed as “The People’s Open.”
Tiger led wire-to-wire. He bogeyed 16, parred 17, and three-putted 18 in near-darkness — and still won by three strokes. Because he was the only player in the entire 156-man field to finish under par. The crowd was the loudest in US Open history. He’d already won the Masters that April, making him the first player since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 to win the year’s first two majors.
This was peak Tiger. The 8th major of his career.
