When Miles Russell qualified for the U.S. Open last week, attention quickly shifted to his friend on the bag with him.
That caddie was Charlie Woods, son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods.
As golf fans wondered whether Woods would return to Russell’s bag at this week’s U.S. Open, Russell revealed that his friend will watch from afar when he tees off on Thursday, June 18.

Instead, the 17-year-old’s swing coach, Ramon Bescansa, will fill Woods’ shoes.
“Ramon’s kind of been on my bag in all my big events,” said Russell. “Whether it was Rocket (Classic) or my first Korn Ferry, I think it’s just a comfortability thing.”
Bescansa, who teaches out of Glen Kernan Club in Russell’s hometown of Jacksonville, is familiar with Shinnecock Hills. He caddied for Russell Knox during the 2018 U.S. Open, the last time the national championship was held there.
Knox tied for 12th, his best finish in a major championship.
Russell, the youngest qualifier this year, earned his spot in the championship after surviving a 3-for-2 playoff for the final spot in the U.S. Open Final Qualifying at BallenIsles Country Club in Florida.

Fellow 17-year-old Giuseppe Puebla claimed the first spot at the same Florida qualifier.
Competing against older players is nothing new for Russell, who is the nation’s top-ranked junior golfer.
A two-time AJGA Player of the Year, Russell became the youngest recipient of the award at age 15, breaking a record previously held by Tiger Woods. Five months later, he became the youngest player in history to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event and notched a top-20 finish.
This year, Russell had his highest finish in a pro event with a tie for 15th at the Korn Ferry Tour Club Car Championship.
Woods narrowly missed a U.S. Open qualification of his own, falling one spot short of progressing to the final stage of qualification.

While the two won’t be on the course together this week, they are expected to share plenty of fairways in the years ahead, as both are committed to Florida State University for the 2027 season.
