Payne Stewart’s final four holes at the 1999 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Father’s Day, June 20, 1999.
After the putt dropped, Stewart kicked his leg back and pumped his fist — the pose that’s now a statue behind the 18th green at Pinehurst. Then he walked over to Mickelson, cradled his face in his hands, and said: “You are going to love being a father.” Mickelson’s daughter was born the next day.
It was Stewart’s third and final major championship. He was killed in a plane crash four months later.
