Edgerton, Wis. — In 1984, Steve Stricker became the first Edgerton High School golfer to win a state championship since 1929. It was a milestone moment for a small town program—one that, decades later, still echoes across fairways back home.
As Stricker’s professional career rose, so did the game in Edgerton. What once felt like a singular achievement has turned into a trend. Edgerton has captured the state spotlight repeatedly, with the Tide earning gold in 2013, again in 2019, again in 2024—and now once more in 2026.
This year, that surge peaked again when Owen Wagie, a senior at Edgerton, won the 2026 state title—adding another chapter to what’s become an unmistakable run of success for the program.
For Stricker, seeing Edgerton evolve into a consistent contender means everything.
“All of a sudden, Edgerton is kind of the golf powerhouse in, in the state,” Stricker said. “You know, it’s kind of fun to see.”
Stricker says it’s not just the trophies—it’s the way golf has taken root in the community. The sport has become part of Edgerton’s identity, with young kids picking it up early and adults embracing it, too.
“Golf is big in Edgerton. It really is,” Stricker said. “And, you know, it brings a lot of joy to my heart for sure to see everybody playing the game there and a lot of young kids.”
That growth has also been supported by a course Stricker still holds close: Towne Country Club, which he calls his favorite. In his view, it’s more than just a place to play—it’s a hub for the culture that’s now fueling Edgerton’s success.
“And it’s kind of a culture now, you know, where the adults are into playing,” Stricker said. “Well, the golf course is in great shape there (Towne Country Club).”
From Stricker’s breakthrough in 1984 to Wagie’s championship run in 2026, Edgerton’s story has become something bigger than a single athlete or a single season. It’s a hometown golf tradition—one that keeps growing, and keeps winning.
