Adam Svensson blew a shot at the U.S. Open after a rules blunder occurred at Lambton Golf & Country Club.
The event played host to one of 10 tournaments that offered spots for the third major of the season, as Miles Russell also found his way into the tournament at Shinnecock Hills with Charlie Woods on the bag.
The field in Toronto was fighting for half a dozen spots, and at the end of the day, Emiliano Grillo, Alejandro Tosti, and Marcelo Rozo snagged the first three, but eight were tied at six-under.
PGA Tour star Max Homa was also in the competition, but lost his chance when he bogeyed the first playoff hole. Svensson, Matt Wallace and Max McGreevy were fighting for the final spot in the field, before the former made a critical mistake.

He was on the green with a putt for par, and marked his ball for McGreevy to putt first. After McGreevy sank the putt, out of confusion, Svensson picked up his ball marker thinking the playoff was over.
With the ball marker in hand meant that Wallace earned the first alternate spot in the third major.

“This is a big deal, it’s a really big deal. There’s a good opportunity that Matt Wallace is going to play (the U.S. Open),” Golf Channel analyst Brendon de Jonge said when discussing the incident. “Often we see the first alternate get in. It’s a big mistake made there by Adam Svensson, and unfortunately at the end of a long day you can make these types of errors.”
Svensson is now the second alternate in the tournament, hoping that two stars drop out now. The 2022 RSM Classic winner didn’t putt out in a playoff to determine the order of alternate spots, as per US Open Final Qualifying rules.

The 32-year-old has made just six of 12 cuts this season and turned professional in 2015, and while Svensson is not guaranteed to feature at Shinnecock Hills, others are.
Grillo won the Canadian Final Qualifying event after he carded rounds of 65 and 66 to post nine-under and earn a one stroke win over Alejandro Tosti.
Colombia’s Marcelo Rozo finished seven-under and solo third place, securing his spot in the U.S. Open and avoiding the playoff madness.
