I agree with you except for the comment that we all need to putt. Some days I wonder what the h**l I am doing with the flat stick. But yeah, for most of us, a putted stroke from the fringe will almost always be better than a chip.

I putt from where you were. But I've become pretty good with a gap wedge about 5 feet further back from where you started.

Just depends. I’m usually a Texas Wedge guy but this past weekend I played a course with wet fringe and super fast greens. It was a nightmare trying to putt from the fringe and chipping was your only option. It’s good to practice both.
I saw a video the other day where a person used a hybrid. I haven't tried it, but it looked like it would do a good job.
