I Got My Golf Swing 3D Scanned – The Results Were Brutal

I’m on a mission to improve my golf game and lower my handicap. Today, I’m getting to see my swing like never before courtesy of a GEARS scan: a 3D motion capture which leaves nowhere to hide.

This was a fascinating experience that’s given me a ton of information, and plenty of things to work on. A big thanks to Joe and JD Golf Academy – one of only two places in the UK where you can get this kind of analysis. I quit my job to see if I can become a scratch golfer in one year. Is it possible to go from a 10.2 to a 0.0 in 365 days of golfing full-time?

Follow my journey as I try to understand what drives sustainable improvement in golf, how quickly that improvement can come, and if this mad endeavour is even feasible.

  1. Now you're cooking Joel. The shape of your backswing now is awesome- by far the best I have seen in you ever! A great lesson and much to work on but I think this is a real turning point in your quest. Thanks for sharing and practice well this week 😁

  2. also I think everything was super on point but also a swing rebuild and he never got to sequencing, what I am saying is this would have been perfect for off season… it would take me months to bring this to the course and he never got to sequencing

  3. The first thing that comes to mind is overthinking. You are seriously investing into the technical side of the game without the practicality. You’ve achieved what most golfers dream of becoming a 10Hcp in a short space of time just by practicing and I personally feel your frustration when you get out on the course and things or expectation isn’t what you imagined. I’m sure all the greats from yesteryear never had access to all this breakdown of your swing / game.

  4. Better late than never…. This should have been the starting point on your journey.
You now have the basis of a functional swing.
Let’s see how much you can progress in 4 weeks, retest and do it every 4 weeks.
If you get to scratch in 15 months from now you will have done brilliantly.
    You need to be realistic?

  5. Great video, really interesting to see the detail. It would be really good to get Anders honest opinion on this and whether he thinks it will help you golf better, or whether he thinks most of this is noise you don't need. Presumably Anders view could be "just listen to me, I'll filter through what important for you and what's not and explain this best for you to action." I think it's another case for you of balancing what's interesting for the channel and what's going to improve your score.

  6. Great stuff Joel, fascinating, very very technical (which I love) might be very difficult to integrate fundamental changes like this in season and not suffer a short to mid term regression in your on course game/natural timing though, hopefully not!

  7. I would question if doing the swing mechanics after going down the route of using Anders could act as a few bumps in the road to get the handicap down. One thing I would mention is there seems to be lots of mental/physical coaching but we are not seeing a huge amount of physical golf on the course apart from a few rounds in the NCG which didn't go to plan. I presume we are half way in the scratch year now. Would be interested to see where we are at and how you feel personally on the goal to getting down. Plus add a few more handicap rounds to show the changes if any on the course etc.

  8. All very technical and interesting but not sure it is going to really help you. Have a look at Chris Mayson who has a very simple way of explaining the swing and I am sure would help you.

  9. Wow so much information Joe was giving and so many positions to hit. It looks like a case of patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time. Wonder what Anders thinks of this and what Joe would make of Scotties swing! Good luck and lots of practise I feel is needed if you want to hit these positions.

  10. I too am a heaver of mass and tried this early hinge method and there was a noticeable difference in the crispness of my strikes.
I hope to see you giving it a solid go. Great content, thank you!

  11. interesting…now afterwards how many of these changes can you incorporate with some practice?? and would love to have seen a post 3d view after all his instruction…I am sure your head and body were spinning afterwards
