PEORIA (25News Now) – Celebrating Juneteenth a few days early, the Tri-County Urban League staged its first ever golf classic in Peoria on Monday.
Twenty golfers helped raise money for the nonprofit to provide programs for the city’s youth at WeaverRidge Golf Club.
Urban League Treasurer Bryant Carter said the organization hopes to raise a total of $15,000 to $20,000.
“We use those funds for staffing, to bring in additional programs for the youth, and for the youth development program,” Carter said. “That gives an opportunity to give some really good options to the community.”
Carter said the Urban League partnered with the Peoria Park District to make the golf outing possible.
After the Juneteenth parade on Saturday, a family-friendly event is being organized with activities including a kids’ carnival.
“There’s a pride in culture,” Carter said. “We want to take every opportunity to shine for our community, for our children, and reconnect it with our culture and past.”
Carter said the total amount raised on Monday is still being calculated.
