Del Paso Country Club hosts golf’s longest day before U.S. Open
HOME OF LAS VEGAS, AND THEY’LL PLAY THE BREWERS TONIGHT. WELL, GOLF’S LONGEST DAY IS GETTING UNDERWAY. TEN SITES ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE HOSTING 36 HOLE QUALIFIERS FOR A SHOT AT MAKING THE U.S. OPEN. ONE OF THE EVENTS IS HAPPENING AT DEL PASO COUNTRY CLUB IN KCRA 3’S. MIKE TESELLE IS ON THE COURSE NOW. TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE LOCAL HOPEFULS WHO ARE HOPING TO WIN THEIR WAY TO A MAJOR, WHICH IS PRETTY COOL. YEAH, THIS IS VERY COOL. YOU JUST MENTIONED THERE’S NO BASEBALL TO WATCH THIS WEEK IN PERSON, SO HERE’S SOMETHING YOU CAN DO TODAY AND A GREAT WAY TO SPEND YOUR MONDAY. WELL, YOU CAN SEE HERE SOME OF THE GOLFERS ON THE PRACTICE GREEN. AND THEN WE JUST HAD A GROUP TEE OFF RIGHT BEHIND THEM ON THE FIRST TEE. SO WE’RE A COUPLE MINUTES AWAY FROM THE NEXT ONES TEEING OFF. BUT TAKE A LOOK BECAUSE WE’VE BEEN OUT HERE ALL MORNING WATCHING THESE HOPEFULS TEE OFF. AND AS BIG OF A DEAL AS THIS IS FOR THESE GOLFERS, FOR THE EL PASO COUNTRY CLUB, WHICH IS ONE OF THE SPOTS HOSTING A QUALIFYING EVENT TODAY. THIS IS BECOME EASIER DONE BEFORE. THIS IS REALLY TRUE GOLF AT ITS CORE, AND YOU CAN COME OUT AND WATCH THESE HOPEFULS BECAUSE BY THE END OF THE DAY, THE TOUR PRO HERE, MIKE GREEN TOLD ME, IT LOOKS LIKE THERE WILL BE THREE GOLFERS FROM THIS EVENT WHO WILL EARN A SPOT IN THE U.S. OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS HAPPENING HERE LATER THIS MONTH. That’s because a long day for 78 golfers could turn into a best day for a precious few golfers.”It look like there be qualifying for three spots to advance,” said Mike Green, Del Paso Country Club’s Head PGA golf professional.The 110-year old club is once again hosting the final qualifying stage for the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York beginning June 8.That means some of the top collegiate golfers, club professionals and even PGA tour players are taking part in a series of one-day, 36-hole events happening at 10 clubs across the country.The event is open to the public and is likely to last into the late afternoon or early evening.”We’re really excited. We’ve had five USGA Championships in the club’s history,” said Green.Monday’s field includes multiple Sacramento area hopefuls, including Alex Lee and Dylan Van Ostrand, as well as Penryn’s Taylor Bromley.Ricky Barnes of Stockton is also a part of Monday’s qualifier.
