Loved Hawk. He would occasionally interject such random thoughts as "lemme tell ya something Stoney, I love cotton candy. Love it!" And he worked very well with Wimpy (Tom Paciorek).
BEST episode yet! Can't express how much I loved Phil Rizzuto.
Hawk didn't retire. He said on, I believe it was Foul Territory, that it was a "retire" or get fired situation. He said something like I got "retired". White Sox are dumb, they teplaced him with Benetti then didn't attempt to keep him. I guess they're doing it à la Marlins style.
That was a really great episode. Lots of laughs. (Honorable mention for the list: Larry Anderson in the Phillies radio booth)
Another thing about Bert Blyleven as a broadcaster was his "Circle Me Bert" bit. He would draw around a fan or group of fans in the stands, alongside a donation for Parkinson's research. It became a favorite bit around here. Then people started riffing on that concept, with signs like "rhombus me Dick" (Bremer, his co-host)
Phil Rizzuto was the voice of my teenage years. He and Bill White were a great pairing.
Oh, cheese
32:30 a classic recent Keith moment was a couple weeks ago in Denver when Steve Gelbs’ “Let’s Be Frank” hot dog review segment went off the rails as Steve came up to the booth with a 24” hot dog. He kept pushing for someone to “Lady and the Tramp” this giant dog with him until Keith finally took him up on it. After taking a couple big simultaneous bites from his end Keith wipes the mustard off his face and says “Ok now what does ‘Lady and the Tramp’ mean?”
Anyway, that being my home booth has had me thinking a lot about how local announcer teams are a perfect case of guys being dudes in baseball, particularly because I still have fun watching the games even with the putrid April the Mets had, and sure enough here you go and vindicate me. Maybe the best episode yet.
Every time I hear the GUYS song I know it'll be a good one
Jay Buhner of the Mariners. He’s been doing color commentary for 10+ years but recently only when the M’s are on the road vs Texas & Houston w/ a few home games a season. He’s annoying & obnoxious but he does say always whatever comes to mind & you hear it like WTF did Buhner say? he does bring a very old school vibe on saying whatever during a ballgame
Incredible incredible ep
"Talking about his wife, his son, food *Shows picture of Rizzuto and Meatloaf*"
That is the best joke this channel has ever made.
Scooter is my favorite, and grew up watching day baseball on WGN with Harry Carey and Steve Stone, and sometimes Wimpy & The Hawk.
Great list. Honorable mention to Larry Anderson ( Phillies radio), telling it like it is!
That thumbnail pic tho. Hawk Harrelson was the original Bono.
Between Buck Martinez and the Kids in the Hall clip, Toronto is feelin' fine here. Great stuff as always! Thanks so much!
I was going to have some choice words for you if Mike Shannon wasn't on this team.
One of the best Guys episodes yet. Well done. I was rolling.
Steve Stone is underrated funny. I used to watch ChiSox games (I'm a Cardinals fan) just to hear him and Jason Benetti. Those two had me cracking.
I miss Jerry Remy so bad. RIP
Who needs Viagra when I have 45 minutes of Guys?
Circle me, Bert! Blyleven was so much fun with some fun '00s Twins teams on Fox Sports.
Was Don Sutton also too professional to make the rotation?
Great finds! And Waite Hoyt is quite the underdog.
I do miss Joe Nuxhall and Marty B.
12:47 is that Bad Lieutenant? Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
so, so good
Dizzy Dean also sounds a lot like the guy from You Know Me, Al
I got to watch both Rizzuto and Kiner growing up. I was never a Rizzuto fan, but I liked Kiner. I moved to SF in the late 90's and began following the Giants. Getting to watch Kruk and Kuip for all these years has been a joy.
Love the shirling reference! Glad Buck Martinez made the team. I miss hearing him so much.
Yer best episode yet!!! Had me laughing out loud which doesn't happen too much these days!! Keep up the good work! Yer gonna go far with this stuff!!!
Glad to see Kruk & Kuip get some love here, they deserve it.
Another good but lesser known Hawkism was "Gaaasss!" He used it for fastballs thrown for strikes. Obvioulsy, typing it in a comment doesn't do the way he would say it justice. I also recall an on-air conversation he had with Tom "Wimpy" Paciorek about the woods used to make bats. Ash was a wood Hawk liked but, as he told Paciorek, "Wimpy, it is hard to find a good piece of ash these days."
Ralph Kiner was one of the voices of my youth, and I really, really miss him all of a sudden.
Appreciate the omission of Tim McCarver. His voice irritated me. And that was even before I knew about the Deion Sanders thing
Awwwwwww Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer. I miss Gary!
Also, Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver are not good sportscasters.
