GRAND FORKS — Both East Grand Forks Senior High golf teams shot their best of the season heading into the Minnesota Section 8AA meet in Bemidji on June 1-2 .
The Green Wave boys won the North Subsection in Roseau on Tuesday, while the Green Wave girls took third. Both teams shot season lows.
East Grand Forks’ Gavin Rude (66) and Brody Johnson (70) finished 1-2 in the individual race, while teammate Beau Boushee took fourth.
“It has been a good battle between us, Warroad, Roseau and Thief River Falls here and there,” EGF coach Kyle Thompson said. “For us going, I looked around the Suburban on our way and just told them that whatever happens today let’s go be better today. We shot a 295 the last time there, and the boys rose to the challenge and a 289 was the lowest of the year and lowest of my time coaching (four years).”

Rude and Johnson were state meet participants a year ago and hope to return this season. At the section meet, the Green Wave will be up against the state’s No. 1 team in Detroit Lakes.
“Everyone is chasing Detroit Lakes,” Thompson said. “They’re defending state champs and bring five guys back from that team. They just reload. If we can go down there and piece together a round around 300 or under, maybe we give them something to think about going to Day 2. That’d be good for us. We’ve done everything we hoped to do and the pressure is off.”
Johnson has been the Wave’s low golfer much of the year but Rude has the capability, Thompson said.
“He has a lot of game,” Thompson said. “He’s started inching down to the 70s. When we were leaving town (for the subsection meet), he said he was going to shoot 65. He must’ve found something because he was trying to call his shot.”
The top team in the section meet, as well as the next five individuals not on that team, advance to state.
The Green Wave girls shot a season-low 364 to qualify for the section meet. Freshman Paige Lindgren took third, shooting an 84.
The other team members to qualify for the section meet were eighth-grader Jadyn Thompson (99), juniors Briana Hallin (91), Tori Gervais (92) and Julia Aker (97) and eighth-grader Lauren Delmore (103).
“This was a great team effort to qualify,” Senior High coach Paula Devine said. “The team really played solid and gritted it out today. We have been bringing our team scores down every week and peaking at the right time going into sections.”
UND volleyball adds two more transfers
UND volleyball coach David Nguyen continues to craft together his first roster in Grand Forks.
Nguyen added Mercyhurst transfer Andrea Zaric and Maryland-Eastern Shore middle blocker Lilliana Montes.
Zaric, of Ontario, spent four seasons at Mercyhurst, racking up 639 kills, 458 digs, 81 blocks and 64 aces.
The 5-foot-11 Zaric was named the NEC player of the week twice last season. She’s totaled at least 180 kills in each of the last three seasons.
The NEC is the conference Nguyen coached during his time at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Montes spent two seasons at UMES. She has two seasons of eligibility left.
Last year, Montes was all-MEAC second team after finishing third on the team with 191 kills. As a freshman, the California native was a MEAC all-rookie selection.
UND’s Keeler qualifiers for nationals
UND’s Jadyn Keeler finished third in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA West Regional late Thursday night in Fayetteville, Ark., to advance to the NCAA national meet.
Keeler, who was seeded fourth, finished in 32 minutes, 11.14 seconds.
The NCAA Championships will be held June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. At regionals, the top 12 individual athletes and top 12 relay teams per event advance to Eugene.
Grand Forks Red River standout softball player Jocelyn Berg announced she has re-opened her recruitment. Berg, who just completed her junior season at Red River, cited coaching changes at UAB for her decommitment. UAB coach Taylor Smartt was placed on administrative leave earlier this month.
Grand Forks Central’s Piper Severson has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Mayville State.
