Jimmy Kimmel’s theory on why Trump skipped Don Jr.’s wedding

Spring is peak wedding season, with weekends this time of year typically packed with ceremonies, receptions, and celebrations. But while most fathers would clear their schedules to attend their son’s wedding, President Donald Trump was notably absent when Donald Trump Jr. tied the knot over the weekend. That gave Jimmy Kimmel plenty of material to work with during Tuesday night’s monologue.

Kimmel zeroed in on the absence of President Donald Trump at the Bahamas wedding of Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife, Bettina Anderson. The late-night host read the president’s RSVP delivered via Truth Social, in which the elder Trump claimed “circumstances pertaining to government” and his love of the United States kept him from the celebration.

But in trying to decipher the realy reason, Kimmel quickly pivoted to a punchline involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. “He had circumstances pertaining to government to get to and also flying to a private island makes him miss his friend Jeffrey who he lost,” Kimmel quipped.

The comedian went on to mock the idea that Trump was simply too busy to attend his eldest son’s wedding. Considering President Trump’s golf schedule and attendance at events like UFC fights, Kimmel had a hard time believing the president couldn’t take a day or two for his son’s wedding.

The ABC host later pointed out the irony of Trump skipping the ceremony despite his well-documented habit of crashing weddings at Mar-a-Lago, showing headlines of the president making surprise appearances at receptions hosted at his Florida resort. “Poor Don Jr. without his father,” Kimmel said. “They had to scramble to find somebody else to make a 90-minute toast about windmills and transgender weightlifters.”

Still, according to Kimmel, the family may get another chance to celebrate together soon. He noted reports that Don Jr. and Anderson are planning a White House celebration with Trump and First Lady Melania Trump expected to attend. “Well, you’d hope so,” Kimmel joked. “They live there. Can you imagine if they didn’t show up to that one too? ‘We wanted to make it, but we were unable to go downstairs.’”

But any wedding celebrations at the White House will have to wait. Kimmel joked that any such event could wind up taking a backseat thanks to preparations for Trump’s planned UFC event on the White House lawn next month.

The comedian roasted the construction underway in Washington, comparing it to a Warped Tour stage after suggesting President Trump may knock down the White House to improve the view. Considering what the president has done to build up a ballroom, maybe Kimmel’s prediction isn’t too far-fetched.

Kimmel likely enjoyed the opportunity to mock the Trump family dynamic, given his recent history with the president. Earlier this year, President Trump quickly came to the defense of First Lady Melania Trump after Kimmel referred to her as an “expectant widow” during a joke about the couple’s age gap.

President Trump responded angrily on social media and in interviews at the time, attacking Kimmel personally while defending his wife. That public show of loyalty made the president’s absence from Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding an especially easy target for the ABC host.
