Everyone Is Bad At Bunker Shots Until You Learn These 2 Things

Bunker shots are supposed to be one of the easiest shots in golf, certainly according to the professionals.

But how do you find them?

I was with Brian a recent student of mine a couple of days ago and his thoughts echoed the thoughts of so many golfers who come to me struggling with this part of the game.

“Danny it’s ok for golf professionals, they play out of perfect sand every time, I have to deal with golf bunkers that are rock hard…I will often leave it in the bunker or blade the ball over the back of the green. Is there something I have to do differently?”

The answer is yes.

Firstly we need to make sure you have a sound bunker technique. I’ve got a super golf drill for that 😁

Then you have to assess the sand and make some small adjustments to your bunker set up depending on how hard or how soft the sand is.

I promise you it’s not difficult once you know how.

Great video lesson Danny, I'm a pretty decent bunker player but when playing a bunker shot do you take the club back outside the line to the right a bit and and then kind of cut across the ball or do you just play the shot like any other normal pitch shot and not go outside the line at all? I've heard different versions on this so which is the correct one to do in bunkers? Thanks.

  8. I dont think we recognise how breaking down and learning one skill takes time. Also there's no doubt other tips too for bunker play but learning and repeating one skill at a time is important. Well done Brian and great coaching Danny. We all wish we had a Danny to regularly coach us.

  11. Fair play to put himself out there like that. I must say at the start of the video he had a very “old man” type swing, you didn’t really say much on his actual swing but by the end of the video his whole posture and how he used his body just looked more athletic

  13. One of the things I love about this channel is how a golfer can feel utter despair about an aspect of his or her game (we've all been their) and have that transmuted into hope and joy with Danny's gentle (and supremely competent) guidance. This student was liberated during this lesson.

  32. The challenge with bunker lessons is that there are too many variables. First is the condition of the sand…For most of us who don’t play top tier courses you get all kinds of sand and mostly very little or compact sand…Second is the lip of the bunker and how you must carry the shot, and third is the distance that you must carry the shot.

    I've heard draw n imaginary disc around the ball and then hit the front of the disc to hit it out. Never really worked for me. This way seems much more effortless.
