Boys Golf: Weston Nyberg leads Alexandria to strong results at Central Lakes Conference championships – Alexandria Echo Press

SARTELL — For the Alexandria boys golf team, they battled against a tougher course on Day 2 of the Central Lakes Conference championships.

The Cardinals finished the 36-hole event in third place with a collective score of 581, shooting a 302 as a team at Blackberry Ridge Golf Club on Thursday, May 21, behind team champion Brainerd (569) and runner-up Detroit Lakes (577). Additionally, Weston Nyberg netted a runner-up finish as one of three Cardinals to place inside the top-10.

Scoring proved to be more challenging against Blackberry Ridge’s par-72 layout, with only two golfers recording rounds of even-par and all but one team posted a higher cumulative score compared to Day 1. Fergus Falls improved on its first-round score of 320 by shooting a 318 on Day 2.

Nyberg posted a two-day total of 1-under 142 en route to a runner-up finish, following up his round of 4-under 67 on Day 1 by shooting a 3-over 75. At one point, the junior golfer held the lead with only seven holes to play following a birdie on the par-5 No. 10 hole coupled with a bogey by overnight leader Brody Oseland of Brainerd on the par-3 No. 11.

However, Oseland proceeded to birdie three of the next five holes en route to taking the individual title at 5-under 138, shooting a 1-over 73 on Day 2, while Nyberg faded in the closing stretch, recording four bogeys or worse over the last seven holes.

Oseland’s teammate Drew Haakonson shot the round of the day, firing an even-par 72 along with Willmar’s Luke Larson, to tie for third alongside Brainerd’s Jack Hagberg and Detroit Lakes teammates Lawsen Justesen and Carter Whitworth with a two-day total of even-par 143.

Additional Cardinal performances include Henry Buttweiler tying for eighth place at 145 and Blake Scholl coming in 10th at 146. Garrison Johnson and Brady Gundberg tied for 22nd at 153, MaCoy Denny was 24th at 154 and William Thornburg tied for 33rd with a 159.

Alexandria will now travel north for the Section 8AAA tournament, which begins at 9 a.m on Wednesday, May 27, at Headwaters Golf Club in Park Rapids.
