In this video, we explain why so many golfers struggle to hit a 3-wood off the ground, and why higher-lofted fairway woods like 5-woods, 7-woods, and even 9-woods are becoming more popular for amateur golfers. Pete explains how swing speed, launch angle, spin rate, loft, club length, and center of gravity all influence whether a fairway wood actually helps you carry the ball farther.
We also discuss when a 3-wood still makes sense, why some golfers hit a 5-wood farther than a 3-wood, how fairway woods compare to hybrids and long irons, and why the number stamped on the club matters less than what the ball is doing at impact.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you should carry a 3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood, hybrid, or long iron, this video will help you make a smarter equipment decision.

I have a Taylormade M2 HL 3W 16.5 degree which is basically a 4 wood. Launches high like a 5 wood but goes the distance of a 3 wood. Off the tee 250-260, off the deck 230-240. I can choke down on it and hit 220 like a 7 wood. My favorite club

golf aint for everyone
I hit my 3w farther than most of you hit your driver. 🤙
Just picked up a 16.5* HL 3W a few days ago. It's a gem off the tee for me. The next club in my bag is a 7W. I used to love my 3 hybrids (5, 6, & 7) but now usually only carry one of them (7H), mostly for greenside shots when there's too much tall grass between my ball and the green. I'll just grip down on my 7W if I'm looking for 5H/6H distances. Usually only carry 10 or 11 clubs in my bag.
If I go 4 wood(3HL) 7 wood what is the best gapping in length between the 2?
Maltby has very customizable options for a DTC and once i sell some of my old equipment, I'll be picking up a new 5,7, and 9 wood from them. They're 17,20 and 23 degrees respectively and adjustable up or down 1 degree. Yes, an adjustable 9 wood. I can't wait, but it's not in the budget until i sell my stuff.
