The Benedictine golf team returned to form on Tuesday, May 19, following a disappointing opening round in the Class 4A State tournament the Cadets hosted on their home course — The Savannah Golf Club.
The Cadets shot 10-over par as a team in their second round — the lowest team round on the day — and moved from fourth place to third. The Cadets shot 602 over the two days, coming in at 34-over par (with the top four scores from six golfers counting toward the team total). BC finished 20 strokes behind team champion Cartersville, which shot 14-over par for the tournament.

Benedictine junior Bear Dollander, who has committed to play at Alabama, started the day in 13th place. The lefty shot a one-under par 70 to climb the leaderboard and finish fourth with a 3-over par 145 in the tournament.
Cartersville junior Bodie Brumlow, a University of Georgia commit, followed his 65 on Monday with a 69 and finished at 8-under to win medalist honors by nine strokes. His teammate, sophomore Reid Henson, tied for second at one-over par with Brooks Adams of Marist.
Dollander opened with a birdie and then dialed in a 6-iron from 210 yards on the second hole to three-feet for an eagle. He made the turn in 33, but a pair of doubles on the back nine stopped him for posting the stellar round he was looking for.
“The score was better today, but obviously we didn’t accomplish what we wanted to do,” Dollander said. “There are positives and negatives, but this is the end of the season. We give God the glory no matter the outcome. We came in expected to win and there’s always going to be added pressure there. We were prepping two weeks in advance and thinking ‘We have to win state.’ I think that showed in the first day, everybody was rattled and playing nervous.

“But we saw our young guys play well and contributed today. I think next year we’ll be just as good, if not better and ready to come at it again.”
Junior Jack Weeks came on strong with a 72 on Tuesday after shooting 77 in the opening round. He finished in a tie for eighth at 7-over par. Weeks eagled the par-5 first and birdied the second to help the Cadets get things going.
Senior Dane Chadwell shot 75 Tuesday and finished at 15-over par, while sophomore Alex Dao carded a 77 to finish at 12 over. Freshman Carson Hayes had a 78 to close the tourney at 15-over par.

The Cadets have four of their starting six coming back for next season, with Dollander and Weeks leading the way.

“Our guys could have packed it in, but they showed up and played really well today — I’m super proud of them,” BC coach Kevin Halligan said. “We’ve got a really strong nucleus of young guys coming back and they love the game of golf. They will keep working hard, I can tell you that. Our program is healthy and we’ll be looking forward to next season.”

Brumlow was excited about taking home medalist honors with his first GHSA state title, but said helping his team win its second straight state crown was more important.
“It’s a pretty big win for myself, but it means a lot more to me to win this one with my teammates,” Brumlow said. “I putted really well today; I didn’t have any three putts. And that gave me a confidence boost. My irons weren’t as sharp as yesterday, but I drove it really well. But to win back-to-to back team championships is really special. These guys are my best friends, so it’s great to win it with them.”

Class A-3A Private Boys
The Savannah Country Day boys finished second in the Class A-3A Private Tournament held at Nob North Golf Club in Cohutta.

The Hornets finished at 19-over par over the 36-hole event, 11 strokes behind Christian Heritage.
Sophomore Kohki Maeda finished fifth, shooting an even-par 144. Junior Charles Morris shot 146, with senior Caden Hartley (151) and sophomore Noah Goldstein (154) also making an impact with their strong play.
Class 6A Girls
The Richmond Hill girls kept the pressure on in Day 2 of their tournament at Bentwater Golf Club, posting a second round score of 28-over par as they finished second, just four strokes behind Lambert.
Junior star Alexa Mohler shot a 2-over par 74 in the second round and finished at 4-over par 148 for the tournament. She was third in the race for the individual title, trailing Grace Lee of Lambert, who shot even-par 144 to take home medalist honors.

Ella Kate Woods closed out an impressive freshman campaign as she finished 12th at 19-over par. Senior Amanda Puchales finished in a tie for 17th at 30-over par.
Class 6A Boys
The Richmond Hill boys finished in ninth place in the Class 6A State boys tournament, which was also played at Bentwater Golf Club.
Senior Ledger Conley, who has signed with Jacksonville University, shot a 1-over par 73 Tuesday and finished in 14th place at 7-over for the tournament.
Patrick Mahaffey finished in 27th at 11-over par, with Mathew Reynolds placing 34th at 13 over.
Class 2A Girls Tournament
Maya Lilja-Vazquez, the standout sophomore from Savannah Arts, was coming off a runner-up finish in the Class 2A state tournament last year.

She did it again on Tuesday, this time going to a playoff against Allie Nguyen of Columbus, who made par on the first extra hole to take home medalist honors.
Lilja-Vazquez shot 73-80 — 153 to finish at nine-over par at Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear.
“I was impressed with Maya’s composure over the two days,” said Johnathan Saxon, the Savannah Chatham Public School System High School golf coach. “If she misplayed a shot, she doesn’t let it get to her and bounces back right away. Last year, she finished second and she was hungry to win it this year. She took the next step by reaching a playoff.”
Class 5A girls
South Effingham finished 11th in the Class 5A tournament held at Jekyll Island Golf Club.

Junior Rylee Jaudon shot 89-88 — 177 to finish 30th for the Mustangs.
