As we have previously established, the recently erected 22-foot golden statue of Donald Trump is not a false idol. But are people gathering around this new addition to Trump National Doral Miami golf course in a way that could be described as worshipful? That’s what President Trump suggested when he called his friend, Pastor Mark Burns, on speaker during the statue’s May 6 dedication.
“Everybody is taking pictures of it, my people told me. It’s unbelievable,” Trump said. “All day long they’re taking pictures. They stand up next to it and have their picture taken. It really came out beautiful.”

If there were ever admiring throngs of people, outside of the dedication event, it seems they’ve dissipated. When the Washington Post visited Doral this week, it did find people occasionally snapping photos of the controversial ode to Trump, which has been dubbed Don Colossus. But the vibe was more bemused than reverent:
On Thursday, the scene was hardly bustling.
Questions to regular golfers here about the statue drew knowing laughs and some raised eyebrows. Out-of-town visitors said they were amused by it. …
Jorge Garcia used his phone to snap a photo of the statue as he stood nearby. He hadn’t walked over to gaze at it; the statue is situated directly across from the golf course’s concession stand. Garcia was waiting for the attendant to return so he could buy a bottle of water on a 94-degree day.
“It’s amazing,” Garcia said, somewhat sarcastically, with a smirk. If he had his own golf course, Garcia continued, “I would do it myself, but bigger.
“I’m kidding.”
There’s at least one person who still seems genuinely in awe of the statue: Donald Trump. The president posted about Don Colossus again on Friday morning (and weirdly, he used the same screenshot from The Telegraph that appeared on his Truth Social feed last week).
The “large group of political supporters who just wanted a statue of yours truly” is a reference to the $PATRIOT cryptocurrency group. It commissioned the statue shortly after the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, then got into a long dispute with the artist, which is why it was only installed this spring.
One might think that a guy who’s still taking heat for comparing himself to Jesus wouldn’t want to draw more attention to the golden statue erected by followers who idolize him. So why did Trump post about Don Colossus again as he was leaving China? The president’s post from an hour earlier offers a clue:
It seems Trump is turning his attention back to his long-gestating Washington, D.C., sculpture garden. We’d better hope that visitors to Doral are “absolutely in love” with Don Colossus, or at least do a better job of pretending to praise this tribute to Trump’s greatness. If not, he might just unleash him on the capital.
