I remember, as a young g golfer. Cursing trees that had the crawling limbs that jut out parallel to the fairway and my ball finding those limbs every round.
I would bitch and moan to myself hoping that a storm would come along do the job for me.
Well, that happened during Katrina. Nearly every one of the trees I had issues with were blown down.
The course just wasn’t the same after that and I longed to have them back in place.
It’s was of no consequence as other trees filled in the gaps eventually.
My point is this, learn to study not just the course but pay attention more to the what the timber is doing.
Trust me, if it’s happening to you it’s happening to everyone else.
The very tree that forced me to learn how to hit a draw with a driver was blown over and I miss that tree every single time I tee it up on our Par 5 15th.
So many legendary shots were hit because of trees. It shows how talented and creative golfers are. Nobody cares you’re hitting your stock 7 iron 200 yards. Curve that ball around the tree and get it to stop on the green from the rough
These kids these days love to complain .. trees stay figure it out whiney ass culture .
There is nothing worse as an amateur than getting a down hill, side hill lie in the middle of the fairway. We're used to trees
Too many trees on a golf course are an abomination. Golf is hard enough without throwing trees into your way. To me it is as much a gimmick as putting a water hazard across the middle of a par 5 fairway that forces a layup off the tee.
Leave the trees!!!
No trees = no bubba Watson hook shot (trees are a part of the game)
It’s about growing grass. With the environmental regulatory scale backs on fertilizers available for use, less trees equals better quality and easier to grow turf with more sunlight and airflow especially on hardwood dominant courses. “Original course design” is just a great excuse for superintendents to use for members who bitch about grass not growing and then turn around and bitch about trees getting cut down.
You need trees or it’s too easy

I think trees are a must. Even as a high hp golfer, I love a course with a lot of trees.
A few well placed tree trees are great. Rose and Rose of woods on either side of a golf hole is not good architecture or strategically interesting.
i get excited when im in the trees. you get to be creative. plus when you hit that exact shot you see in your head, theres nothing like it. plus im in the trees a lot lmao

Trees are obstructions and obstructions make the game harder. Remove the obstructions and it gets easier. Pretty simple, really. These guys are going to destroy an iconic old golf course this week. No knock against Donald Ross; it’s just a different game than it was 100 years ago.

You can’t have both.
Keep the trees, we need as many as we can have for nature if nothing else, unless it's a links course there is no reason not to have them.

Arominik is the ugliest course in modern major golf
Its more fun and challenging and the courses look 3x better with them.
