Former PGA champion Rory McIlroy faced discomfort due to a toe blister early in the week, causing the athlete to cut his practice round on May 12 short. According to ESPN, he took his shoe off on the fourth tee before getting on a golf cart to head back to the clubhouse.

Two days later, the two-time Masters winner finished the first round of the tournament with a score of 74 (four over par). PEOPLE witnessed McIlory become visibly upset during the round, including slamming his driver into the ground after his shot on the fourth tee.

“I’m just not driving the ball well enough,” he told media after the May 14 round, per the PGA. “It’s been a problem all year for the most part. Yeah, I’ve sort of got, like I miss it right, and then I want to try to correct it. And then I’ll overdo it, and I’ll miss it left. It’s a bit of back-and-forth that way. So that’s pretty frustrating, especially when like, I pride myself on driving the ball well.”

Wyndham Clark and Homa — who are both T-Mobile ambassadors — took a break from tournament preparations to engage with fans at T-Mobile’s Club Magenta on May 13. The premier lounge, which is available exclusively to T-Mobile customers, offers shaded seating alongside the 15th green, complimentary cocktails and meet-and-greets with PGA pros and other personalities.

Before their appearances, the golfers spoke to PEOPLE about their mindsets heading into the first round, with Homa joking there wasn’t “a whole lot of locked in at the moment” because both of his kids were sick. (Homa shares 3-year-old son Cam and baby Austin — who was born in August 2025 — with his wife, Lacey Homa.)

For Clark, who made headlines at the 2025 tournament for dangerously throwing his driver after a bad tee shot, it’s all about focusing on his “process.””Golf is such an inconsitent game. It’s very difficult to be consistent, and even some of the best players struggle with that,” he told PEOPLE on the T-Mobile Driving Range at Aronimink. “But what you can be consistent with is your process. So if you can get better at that then you’ll start seeing results.”

Clark added, “I’m not perfect. I’ve had my ups and downs but that’s really what I try to focus on.”
