Duke Graduate Alex Smalley Emerges as Surprise Contender at 2026 PGA Championship 2026

American golfer Alex Smalley is quickly becoming one of the breakout stories of the 2026 PGA Championship after an impressive opening performance at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

The 29-year-old Duke University graduate entered the tournament as an under-the-radar name, but golf fans and analysts are now paying close attention after Smalley fired a strong 3-under-par 67 during the opening round. His composed play placed him among a crowded leaderboard featuring some of the biggest stars in golf.

Known for his calm demeanor and accurate ball striking, Smalley narrowly missed a birdie putt on the final hole that could have given him the outright lead. Instead, he finished tied alongside top-ranked players in one of the most competitive opening rounds of a major championship this season.

Born in Rochester, New York, Smalley built his reputation during a successful college career at Duke University, where he studied environmental science and collected multiple collegiate victories before turning professional in 2019. He also represented the United States in the prestigious Walker Cup.

Although Smalley has yet to win a PGA Tour event, he has consistently shown flashes of potential. Recent strong finishes on the PGA Tour, including solid performances at major events and team competitions, hinted that a breakthrough moment could be approaching.

At Aronimink, Smalley’s combination of driving accuracy and confident putting allowed him to stand out on a difficult course setup that challenged many of golf’s elite players, including several former major champions.

With stars like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm competing for the Wanamaker Trophy, Smalley’s rise has added a fresh storyline to the championship.

Now, the Duke graduate has a chance to turn an impressive start into the biggest moment of his professional career.
